Walter Sanford, Planetarium Teacher

The Carl Sandburg Middle School planetarium was built as an addition to Fort Hunt High School and was completed in January of 1970. In 1985, the name of Fort Hunt High School was changed to Carl Sandburg Intermediate School. The planetarium has a Spitz A4 planetarium projector and a 30 foot diameter dome. It has 76 seats, 54 permanent and 24 folding chairs, in a unidirectional pattern. Fire destroyed much of the school in 1978 and the planetarium received much smoke damage. The planetarium was renovated after the fire and is fully operational.

Walter Sanford has been the planetarium teacher since Fall 1997.  He was formerly an Earth Science teacher at West Springfield High School.
