The Herndon High School planetarium opened in Fall of 1967. The planetarium uses a Spitz A3P projection system, has 30 foot diameter dome, and has 48 permanent seats and 30 folding chairs in a chevron seating pattern. A renovation of the planetarium, which was completed in December of 1991, included carpeting and painting.

Mary Blessing has been the planetarium teacher since September 1995. She was formerly an Earth Science teacher at the school. She is an active participant in NASA's FOSTER project.
