The Hayfield Secondary School planetarium opened in fall of 1969. It has a Spitz A4 projector, a 30 foot diameter dome, and 75 seats in a chevron pattern -- 40 permanent and 35 folding chairs. In January of 1970 a pipe burst in the office next to the planetarium during the coldest January since 1940. The resulting steam destroyed all of the special effect projectors and necessitated the rewiring of the A4. The planetarium was reopened after a three month renovation. The A-4 projector was completely overhauled in 1999.
