Overview

Personal and Financial Mathematics develops the skills and knowledge necessary to become educated consumers. Using calculators in a problem-solving approach, students investigate consumer topics related to expenditures, income, money management, and economic indicators. Other technological resources are used as appropriate.

a. Investigate and compare the cost-effectiveness of a variety of banking services including checking, savings, loans, investments, mutual funds, bonds, and credit cards.

b. Simulate the process associated with managing a checking account.

c. Use estimation skills and money management strategies to plan a budget for an individual or a family including food, clothing, housing, transportation, medical expenses, insurance, recreation, education, savings, and investments.

d. Investigate and compare a variety of taxes to include income (federal, state, and local), property, utility, and special purpose taxes such as entertainment, luxury, gasoline, excise, and import.
