Virginia Wellness Modifications for Adapted Physical Education

Cardiovascular Endurance
  • establish a shorter route within the mile ending together
  • choose a friend, run until they stop, and record the distance
  • run a shortened distance with a predetermined time
  • walk around a set of cones and count # of cones passed
  • run/walk "across" the track and back to the starting point
  • maneuver a wheelchair around obstacles such as cones: counting the # of touches (mistakes) and elapsed time
  • roll down and back on a mat for several minutes non-stop
  • move arms back and forth for a predetermined length of time without stopping
  • lift feet off of the wheelchair footrests continuously for 1-3 minutes

Upper Body Strength
  • flexed arm hang
  • straight arm hang
  • stand and pull up so that feet go off the floor w/ legs straight or bent
  • perform push-ups
  • perform modified push-ups
  • maintain the "up" position of a push-up for a certain # of seconds
  • raise and lower a softball or wiffel bat a certain number of times in one minute
  • raise a bat with weights (deck rings)
  • squeeze a "therapy ball" or a rubber deck ring
  • adjust the height of the bar to enable student to perform a "sitting" pull-up
  • if unable to "pull" - maintain a grip on the bar as long as possible from a sitting or standing position (SPOT CAREFULLY IF STANDING)
  • lie on floor on back with the bar removed from wall and resting above; pull up

Abdominal Strength
  • lean forward in chair/wheelchair and sit up into upright position
  • lift both feet off the floor or footrest
  • "roll up" into a curl-up using elbows to help get up
  • raise bent knees up towards chest
  • touch knees, shins, ankles, or shoes
  • begin in "up" position and lower back as far as possible and return to "up" position
  • lift head or head/shoulders off the mat
  • provide support by grasping forearms and assist them up
  • partner sit-ups with teacher sitting facing student with legs stabilizing student's; hold hands and pull up into position
  • sit with "theraband" around chest and wheelchair or regular chair and lean forward against resistance

Flexibility
  • reach to knees, shins, shoes or shoelaces and hold for _____ seconds
  • reach and record for each hand instead of both together
  • sit in a wheelchair and reach for the edge of the tray with one or both hands
  • sit and reach to touch the wall when "parked" or sitting facing the wall
  • sit on floor and reach with assistance
  • reach up and touch head or face for a certain number of seconds or repetitions
  • place the box on a desk and reach forward while sitting in a wheelchair (may not need different criteria)
