Communication

Person-to-Person Communication

  • Introduce oneself and others using appropriate forms of address to peers, adults and children.
  • Use appropriate gestures and expressions of greeting and leave-taking.
  • Ask and respond to simple questions about someone else’s identity and well-being.
  • Discuss the origin of names, placement of first and last names (no middle names) in the traditional Korean way of naming children; usage of calling names among siblings.
  • Compare the usage of personal pronouns in the USA and in Korea.

Listening and Reading for Understanding

  • Differentiate between informal and formal exchanges.
  • Comprehend phrases related to a person’s state of well-being.

Oral and Written Presentation

  • Demonstrate attention to accuracy of register in introducing self and expressing greetings (according to age and position; it changes).
  • Present rehearsed and spontaneous greetings and introductions.
  • Focus on humility of oneself when making an introduction. In Korea, "you" is used in many different ways; much more complicated than in other countries.
