Beginning and intermediate guitar instructional classes are offered as electives to middle and high school students. Schools with advanced guitar classes (guitar ensemble) include opportunities for public performances.

The Fairfax County Music Program of Studies for guitar is aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning as well as the Music Educators National Association National Standards. It documents content and achievement benchmarks for students enrolled in the FCPS guitar program.

School guitar ensembles present concerts, participate in the Mid-Atlantic Guitar Ensemble Festival, take field trips and enjoy numerous other activities. In addition, the opportunities of playing the guitar after high school are abundant with many universities offering guitar and music industry programs. Learning to play the guitar and belonging to an ensemble opens up a new world of friendship and fun.
