Music instruction is a core element of the general education of every student in Fairfax County Public Schools. The Elementary General Music Program of Studies is a comprehensive curriculum based on the Virginia State Music Standards of Learning and aligned with the National Standards for Arts Education.

All FCPS students enrolled in Kindergarten through sixth grade participate in general music instruction. General music instruction is inclusive, balanced and sequential, with a strong focus on music literacy. Instruction is provided by certified and licensed music educators.
