Overview

Students in kindergarten and the primary grades are introduced to a study of history, geography, civics, and economics. Students learn basic concepts of chronological time, physical and human geography, citizenship education, and economic choices. The lives of interesting people make rich the stories of history. Using trade books, technology, and maps and globes, students broaden their study of history to include early civilizations, develop map skills, learn the value of rights and responsibilities, and demonstrate enhanced understanding of basic economic concepts. In fourth grade Virginia Studies,1607 to the Present, frames the program of studies. In fifth grade World Cultures is taught. A two-year American history survey is begun in grade six.
