The Work & Family Institute is part of Family Services and Involvement Section (FSIS) of Fairfax County Public Schools. We bring customized, on-site training and educational seminars to businesses, organizations, and government agencies and provide assistance to managers and employees in addressing work/life issues.
Our Mission
Our mission is three-fold:
- To encourage the business community to recognize and respond to the need for personal and professional development in the workplace.
- To provide resources and support for employees who are balancing work and personal life.
- To help employers support and retain productive employees by creating and maintaining a flexible work environment.

Our Presenters
Our presenters have an average of 10-15 years of experience conducting parenting, and personal and professional development programs. They are selected for their overall knowledge of the subject matter as well as their flexibility, philosophy, and presentation style. Many of them have backgrounds in counseling, marriage and family therapy, conflict resolution and mediation, nursing, staff development, and diversity training.

Our Programs and Services
A variety of topics are available for work site presentations to address employee and management concerns, in categories such as:
- Personal and professional development
- Stress and time management
- Communication and conflict resolution
- Diversity and intercultural communication

In addition to seminars, other services include:
- On-site consultations to determine company needs and employee concerns.
- Full- and half-day professional training workshops for employees and/or managers.
- Assistance in the development of work site support groups for employees with special concerns, such as single parenting, divorce, illness, elder care, or grief.
