MAY 2008

The professional TV Production program at West Potomac Academy had 10 student entries in the Video Fairfax Contest in April.  Two students were recognized for their video “Checkout – The Musical” and “Best Buddies”.  “Best Buddies” won Honorable Mention while “Checkout – The Musical” won first place!  The students won $500.00 from Video Fairfax.

100 students represented FCPS at the Virginia SkillsUSA State Leadership Competition in April.  More and 50 students were recognized as top finishers and 20 have advanced to the national competition in Kansas City the last week of June.  Congratulations to Annandale High School, Edison Academy, Chantilly Academy, Hayfield Secondary School, and Fairfax Academy for their first place finishers.

APRIL 2008

Congratulations to the winners of the District 5 SkillsUSA competitions.  Fairfax County Public Schools will be sending 99 contestants to the SkillsUSA State Leadership Conference in Hampton, Virginia on April 25-26.  Students from eight high schools and academies make up the delegation representing Fairfax County Public Schools.

Students from the automotive collision program at Edison Academy turned the tables on the staff by providing a day in the shop for the faculty and staff of Edison High School.  Beginning after spring break, faculty and staff from Edison High School can bring their car to the automotive collision shop from
3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursdays on a first-come first-serve basis for light vehicle repair (oil changes, tire rotations, light bulb replacement, paint chip repair, dent pulling, etc).  The faculty and staff do the repairs under the supervision of the automotive collision students.  The students help the faculty and staff by identifying tools and equipment needed and the appropriate use of tools and equipment.  

An automotive technology team from Hayfield Secondary School represented Fairfax County Public Schools and the Washington Area New Automotive Dealers Association (WANADA) at the Greater New York Auto Show earlier this month.  The team received the highest Automotive Service Exam (ASE) score in the nation, and was the only team to complete the competition and start the car during the time allowed.

On May 5, 2008, 100 students from Fairfax County Public Schools will compete in the Second Annual Criminal Justice Field Day and Competition at the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy.  Students will compete in an obstacle course, crime scene handling, Laser Shot accuracy, and visual recognition competition.  The Fairfax County Police Department and Sheriff’s Office will be hosting the event and will serve as judges and provide several displays for the students.

MARCH 2008

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has partnered with the Foundation for Applied Technical Education, Inc. (FATE) in an endeavor to make the Spring Village residential construction project the first universal designed (UD) planned community in Fairfax County.  This partnership includes a $170,000 grant to incorporate UD components into the homes and community. 

The Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce has named Wayne White, cosmetology teacher at Chantilly Academy, as the Educator of the Year for 2008.

FEBRUARY 2008

West Potomac TV Production hosted TV professionals from Los Angeles, California, including a professional makeup artist, talent agents, a director, and talent ranging in age from elementary school through adult.  The guests demonstrated special effects makeup application on the students and also participated in a panel session to answer students’ questions.

More and 300 students competed in the District 5 SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Competition in January.  Even though there are still several competitions to be completed, more than 70 students from across FCPS will be representing Northern Virginia at the SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Competition in April at the Hampton Conference Center in Hampton Virginia.

JANUARY 2008

The final plans for the Spring Village Estates subdivision have been submitted to Fairfax County Plan Review and have passed through the initial stage.   The plan has several more county approvals to receive, and FATE expects final approval before spring.

This year’s District 5 SkillsUSA competitions will be held at Edison Academy on Friday, January 25, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please stop by if you have time in your schedule

The Edison Academy automotive collision program will display a car and associated student work at this year’s Washington Area New Automotive Dealers Association (WANADA) annual car show at the Washington Convention Center from January 23-27. 

NOVEMBER 2007

The automotive collision instructors attended a two-day training I-CAR instructor training class and are now qualified to teach and award I-CAR points to students.  The Chantilly Academy's automotive collision program is now an approved Level II I-CAR Training Alliance School.

The Spring Village Estates Subdivision Plan has completed the initial submission phase and has now entered the second submission phase with Fairfax County Department of Planning and Zoning.  A final approved Subdivision Plan is expected before the end of the year. 

Twelve students from Annandale High School’s automotive technology 2 class have been successfully dual enrolled with the Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) Automotive Technology class: Brakes, and Steering and Suspension.  Students successfully completing the course and corresponding National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) end-of-program test will be awarded eight college credits from NVCC. 

OCTOBER 2007

Students from automotive technology, automotive collision, construction, cosmetology, culinary arts, and heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) participated in the SkillsUSA Virginia State Fair on
October 1, 2007.  First place awards were received in automotive collision, cosmetology and culinary. 

A team of students from Hayfield Secondary School has been selected to represent Fairfax County Public Schools and the Washington Area New Automotive Dealers Association (WANADA) at the New York Auto Show later this year.  The team will be competing against more than 100 automotive dealer association from across the nation.   

The Marine Corps K9 Unit from Quantico demonstrated dog handling techniques for the Marshall Academy criminal justice students.

During September and early October, the electrical construction and engineering students from the Edison Academy worked to wire the Foundation for Applied Technical Education (FATE) house in Spring Village, Springfield, VA.

HVACR students from Edison Academy presented Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning awareness seminars at the State Fair, at Edison Academy’s Back-to-School night for parents, and will conduct another at Lowe’s in Dale City, Virginia at 10:00 a.m. on October 27, 2007.  As part of their seminars, students are giving away CO detectors to the members of the public who have gas appliances as a part of their seminars. This effort is funded through a grant the students received from the Lowe’s Corporation and SkillsUSA.

SEPTEMBER 2007

In June 2007, students from the Hayfield Secondary School automotive technology program finished 2nd in the state at the FORD/AAA competition held in Virginia Beach. The team of two also won more than $54,000.00 in prizes and scholarships.

Two students from Edison Academy won state officer and national officer positions in SkillsUSA. A culinary arts student is Region One Vice President for National SkillsUSA and a cosmetology student is Region Two Vice President for Virginia SkillsUSA.

The cosmetology programs at Chantilly and Marshall academies are undergoing an extensive facility remodeling to provide students with updated cosmetology labs.

MAY 2007

Chantilly Academy won a $10,000.00 Lowe’s/SkillsUSA grant to create 50 toolkits that students can sign out at the beginning of the year, use for their training program, and return at the end of the year. The toolkit project will teach pride of ownership and responsibility.

Edison Academy won a $10,000.00 Lowe’s/SkillsUSA grant to promote awareness of carbon monoxide poisoning and to distribute carbon monoxide detectors through educational workshops created and run by the students from the HVAC program at Edison Academy.

Fifteen students from across Fairfax County have advanced to the 2007 SkillsUSA National Competition and Leadership Conference in June. Students will compete in culinary arts, motorcycle repair, computer systems technology, and cosmetology.

APRIL 2007

The Chantilly Cosmetology program held a cut-a-thon for "Life With Cancer". With the help of current and former students they were able to raise $1,000 for the foundation.

SkillsUSA students and advisors from the Edison Academy attended a symposium at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on agriculture, youth employment, and youth safety education.

MARCH 2007

Annandale and Centreville High Schools received the approval of the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) certification process which concluded with a two-day onsite evaluation in January. These schools are the 4th and 5th schools in Fairfax County Public Schools to reach this milestone.

Congratulations to the winners of the District 14 SkillsUSA competitions. Fairfax County Public Schools will be sending 125 contestants to the SkillsUSA State Leadership Conference in April. Students from eight high schools and academies make up the delegation representing Fairfax County Public Schools.

Centreville High School successfully completed a two-day National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) evaluation in late January. The comments from the evaluation team highlighted the programs organization, leadership, and school and county cooperation. Final results are expected in early March.

Last year’s SkillsUSA second place national postgraduate from Chantilly Academy’s cosmetology program has been selected to compete in the SkillsUSA World competition scheduled for later this year.

JANUARY 2007

FATE (also known as the Foundation) has been assisting with the establishment of the Spring Village Residential Construction Site in Springfield, Virginia. FATE has assisted with establishing the construction program at the new location.

The Foundation is currently working to expand and update the Digital Imaging and Graphics Studio (DIGS), is seeking industry professionals to assist with the process. Providing student enterprises for students is the focus of FATE and members are looking to expand opportunities in the area of landscape architecture and turf management.

Thirty-two Construction Technology students from Chantilly Academy were invited by NVR to visit its Thurmont, Maryland manufacturing center on December 14, 2006. Located on a 135 acre campus, this manufacturing center employs the latest technology in home building and traditional high-end hand craftsmanship to pre-build nearly 7,000 NV Homes and Ryan Homes each year. Students were exposed to each step of the manufacturing process, computer-aided building systems, materials management, transportation and shipping, and careers at NVR.

Restored cars from Lake Braddock Secondary School’s and Marshall Academy’s automotive technology program are featured in the 2007 Washington Auto Show, at the Washington Convention center January 24-28.

OCTOBER 2006

Trade and Industrial
More than 150 students from Edison Academy and Hayfield Secondary school attended the 2006 Virginia SkillsUSA State Fair Competition on October 2, 2006. Students competed in cosmetology, auto tech, auto collision, construction, electrical and heating and ventilation, and leadership.

The landscape architecture and turf management course is off and running having already installed new landscaping at the entrance of the Edison Academy. The students have also begun planning a landscape design for the first house in Spring Village in conjunction with the Foundation for Applied technical Education, Inc. (FATE).

Twelve criminal justice students from West Potomac Academy will be participating in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Red Ribbon Campaign November 3, 2006. The students will make a 20-minute presentation at the DEA headquarters for an audience of agents. The students will be broken into small groups and will present on the following topics:

“What parents can do to prevent youth substance abuse:”
• Establish and maintain good communication with your child.
• Get involved and stay involved in your child’s life.
• Make clear rules and enforce them with consistency and appropriate consequences.
• Be a positive role model. Do not use illicit drugs or abuse alcohol. If you smoke, make plans to stop.
• Teach your child to choose friends wisely.
• Keep track of your child’s activities—know what your child is doing and with whom.

The aerospace science program at Westfield High School has been selected for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Women's Initiative for January 2007. A panel of college women, studying engineering and technology at MIT, will visit the school and meet with girls who may be interested in a career in engineering or technology.

SEPTEMBER 2006

The Foundation for Applied Technical Education, Inc. (FATE) held a ground breaking ceremony at the new residential construction site at Spring Village. Students, School Board members, FCPS Leadership Team members, and community members were on hand for the dedication by Dr. Jack Dale, Superintendent.

A Chantilly Academy cosmetology student placed 2nd at the 2006 SkillsUSA National Leadership Conference. She was also featured on Channel 9 news in June.

The Edison Academy Heating, Venting, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) program completed a year-long HVAC certification evaluation. In June, a team of three industry leaders from across the country visited and evaluated the HVAC program at Edison for two days. After a thorough evaluation, the HVAC program was awarded the HVAC Excellence Certification. This is a nationally recognized certification for HVAC training programs.

The 2006 I-CAR golf tournament resulted in the donation of the I-CAR curriculum for Edison and Chantilly Auto Collision programs.
