SEPTEMBER 2009

A student from professional photography at Fairfax Academy won second place at the SkillsUSA National Leadership Competition and Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. 

Congratulations to Trible’s Inc. who received the Career Connections Award at the Business and Community Partnerships Awards Ceremony for their work with the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration program at Edison Academy.

The Volkswagen Group of America (VGA) and FCPS automotive technology partnership officially kicked off June 4, 2009, at South County Secondary School.  The automotive technology instructors were joined by the President of VGA, Governor Timothy M. Kaine, Delegate Kenneth Plum, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova, and several FCPS School Board members and Fairfax County Public Schools leadership team members.  The kick off culminated with the instructors receiving the keys to 13 new Volkswagen and Audi vehicles.  The cars will be used as teaching tools in the automotive technology classes.   As part of the VGA partnership the automotive instructors received training from Volkswagen and Audi technicians at the Ashburn training center August 25-28.

Congratulations to the winners from professional television production class at West Potomac Academy for placing second in the Video Fairfax Contest held in June.  Two students produced a short feature entitled “Feed Your Brain!” which showcased their storytelling and editing skills.

Eight students from FCPS were selected to attend the 20th annual Virginia American Legion Junior Law Program at the Virginia State Police Training Academy in Richmond June 15-19.  Students from West Potomac, Stuart, West Springfield, and Edison High Schools participated.

Congratulations to Soussan Bayati, Edison Academy cosmetology teacher, who was recognized as having an exemplary career and technical education program by Governor, Timothy M. Kaine
August 4, 2009, at the Virginia Department of Education Career and Technical Education Summer Leadership Conference.  Governor Kaine presented Mrs. Bayati with a $5,000 check for the school, and a banner and plaque for the classroom.  Mrs. Bayati plans to use the money to implement a client management system in the classroom.

MAY 2009

Congratulations to Soussan Bayati, Edison Academy cosmetology teacher, for being selected by the Virginia Career and Technical Education Foundation as one of three finalists for a Governor's Award for Exemplary Standards.  On May 1, 2009, a team of evaluators from Richmond visited Edison Academy and conducted an onsite evaluation which included interviewing current and former students, local businesses, and local administration to validate what the team had already reviewed in a document submission by Mrs. Bayati.  Based on the document and onsite evaluation, it was determined that the cosmetology program at Edison Academy is exemplary. 

Mrs. Bayati will be recognized at the summer Career and Technical Education Conference in Richmond where Governor Kaine will present the award to her and a banner plus $5,000 to the school program.

On May 4, 2009, 100 criminal justice students from seven high schools and academies from Fairfax County came to the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy for the 3rd Annual Field Day.  Students competed in crime scene, obstacle course, assailant identification, and laser shooting events.  Students also had the opportunity to interact with several specialized units with the police and sheriff’s department.  When all of the competitions were completed, it was determined that the team from Robinson Secondary School had the best overall scores and took home the trophy for this year. 

APRIL 2009

Congratulations to the FCPS teachers and students who attended the SkillsUSA State Conference March 27-28.  More than 70 students competed in 29 different competitions and 57 students finished in the top five.  FCPS will be sending 11 contestants and one national officer candidate to the National SkillsUSA Conference in Kansas City, Missouri in June.

MARCH 2009

Congratulations to students from Fairfax Academy and West Potomac Academy TV production classes who won Honorable Mention for their documentaries, “Dear Mr. Obama: Alternative Energy”, “The Central Issue”, and “Incarceration Nation”, in the C-SPAN 2009 StudentCam competition.  C-SPAN received a record number of entries this year - nearly 1,000. 

Good luck to the 76 Trade and Industrial, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Health and Medical Sciences students from across Fairfax County who will be competing at the Virginia SkillsUSA State Leadership Conference March 27-28 in Hampton, Virginia. 

FEBRUARY 2009

The Edison Academy Heating Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) High School program in Alexandria, Va. signed a formal business partnership with Trible’s, Inc. of Upper Marlboro, Maryland on Thursday, February 19, 2009.  Trible’s has been a major community sponsor for the Edison Academy HVACR high school program for the past eight years providing donations of appliances and parts, as well as behind the scenes field trips and training for students at their Springfield location.  This formal partnership signed by Preston Trible, President of the company, cements the entire company’s commitment to the Edison Academy program for the benefit of continued generations of HVACR students.

The District V SkillsUSA Leadership Conference and Competition was held with more than 300 students from Fairfax County Public Schools, Arlington County Public Schools, and Arlington City Schools.  One hundred and twenty students from Fairfax County Public Schools qualified and now advance to the State Leadership Conference in Hampton, Virginia on March 27-28.

The Residential Construction Site in Springfield, Virginia has received final approval from Fairfax County to begin the site work at Spring Village Estates.  The approval was needed in order to advance the program to lot 2 and provide permanent utilities to lot 1.  The house on lot 1 is nearing completion and will be listed for sale as soon as the street, water, and sewer connections are in place.

JANUARY 2009

Professional Graphics Students from West Potomac Academy helped sponsor Fashion Night at the National Zoo on Friday, December 19, 2008.  The students worked on marketing fliers and electronic ads for the event.  Graphics students also worked with Fashion Design students to create the look and theme for construction of the garments.  Then graphic designers completed the graphic production of the garment by incorporating the dye, paint, or drawn illustration onto the garment.  Student designers were showcased, along with the professional designers’ garments and accessories, to highlight the use of such materials as alpaca wool, organic wool, previously worn and recycled cashmere; soy milk; hemp, and bamboo. 

Congratulations to South County Secondary School’s automotive technology program for completing the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) certification process and earning the title of NATEF Certified Training Center.

Congratulations to Hayfield Secondary School’s automotive technology program for receiving a $1,000 grant from Stellar Solutions, Inc.  Stellar Solutions Education Foundation provides grants to local schools that teach community service and civic responsibility to students.  The funds will be used to help students travel to local, district, state and national SkillsUSA leadership competitions.

NOVEMBER 2008

The students from the residential construction site hosted a Halloween Open House on October 30 at the Spring Village Residential Construction Site.  The students decorated the house with typical Halloween decorations and provided guided tours of the house for guests. Traditional Halloween treats where given out as well as a few tricks - "Boo".

OCTOBER 2008

The students at the residential construction site at Spring Village Estates (6391 Spring Village Road, Springfield, VA 22150) will host a Halloween open house on Thursday, October 30, 2008, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Guests will be treated to a variety of safe Halloween scares. 

On October 7, automotive collision students from Marshall Academy were featured on the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) main web page.  The web page featured a photograph of 14 students, wearing the appropriate safety gear (respirators, coveralls, and safety glass), in the paint booth after they had completed a lesson in air quality safety from the Coordinator for Environmental Safety from FCPS.

Three former West Potomac Academy students have teamed up with their teacher to produce a documentary that explores the contributing factors that relate and/or lead to homelessness among veterans. The documentary is scheduled for release on Veterans’ Day, Tuesday, November 11, on a platform web site that includes corresponding journalism and a digital library of interviews.  West Potomac Academy is one of six high school academies in Fairfax County Public Schools. SEPTEMBER 2008

District 5 SkillsUSA Virginia is proud to announce that an Edison Academy cosmetology student has been elected as a Virginia SkillsUSA At-Large State Officer.  An Edison Academy A+ student has been elected the SkillsUSA Region 1 Vice President.  

A student from professional photography at Fairfax Academy won 2nd place at the SkillsUSA National Leadership Competition and Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. 

Automotive technology teachers from Centreville and Annandale High Schools represented Fairfax County at the Automotive Youth Education Systems (AYES) 2008 Summer Conference in Dearborn, Michigan.  The teachers received training on the latest in automotive instruction, innovation, repair tools, and repair techniques.  They also had time to meet other AYES instructors and strategize how to implement the AYES model in FCPS.

Twenty-five percent of the trade and industrial teachers attended this year’s Virginia Association of Trade and Industrial Educators (VATIE) Summer Conference in Roanoke, Virginia.  The teachers received statewide trade and industrial program updates as well as two days of focused program area update training. 

Congratulations to Soussan Bayati as being named the 2008 Teacher of the Year by the Virginia Association of Trade and Industrial Educators (VATIE).  Soussan was recognized at the VAITE Summer Conference in August in Roanoke, Virginia.  Soussan was nominated by several cosmetology teachers across the state for her dedication to her students and the industry. 

HVACR students from Edison Academy and their instructor presented information to the US House of Representatives at a Career and Technical Education conference.  The event was sponsored by the Association of Career and Technical Education, and Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO) and held in the Rayburn House Office Building on September 9, 2008. The theme of the event was "CTE Goes Green."   Students had the opportunity to highlight and explain to house members and their staffs the importance of carbon monoxide safety in homes and business, demonstrated the proper installation of CO detectors, and explained how to detect the early warning signs of CO poisoning. Student presenters explained how career and technical education courses, such as HVACR, are preparing them for their future in the work force and in postsecondary education.
