APRIL 2008

The key to success for the competitive trip to the DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Atlanta, Georgia is preparation.  On Thursday, April 17, 128 Virginia DECA members met at Chantilly High School.  The evening included professional training, dinner, and guidance on the competitive edge needed for the International DECA competition.  Students were exposed to panel interviews and role play situations.  Individual, team, and written event preparations were conducted.  A critique followed each individual or group interview.  ICDC alumni presented their perspective on what it takes to be a winner.

MARCH 2008

DECA State Competition
The annual DECA State Leadership Conference was held March 7-9, 2008, in Norfolk, Virginia. Approximately 600 students from Fairfax County Public Schools participated in the conference.  Over 200 students will be representing Fairfax County and the state of Virginia at the DECA International Career Development Conference in Atlanta, Georgia at the end of April. 

Marketing Advisory Board (MAB) Winners’ Breakfast
On February 29, 2008, MAB hosted a breakfast to recognize the first place winners from the DECA District Competition.  More than 100 students were recognized with their parents, peers and teachers in attendance.  The guest speaker was Larry Michael, the voice of the Washington Redskins.

FEBRUARY 2008

The Fairfax County DECA District Leadership Conference was held at Lake Braddock Secondary School on January 25.  Approximately 750 marketing students competed in competency-based events including; apparel and accessories, automotive services, business services, food marketing, quick service restaurant, restaurant and full service, retail, and sports and entertainment.  The top two winners from each category in each of the five districts will be recognized at a winner’s breakfast sponsored by the Marketing Advisory Board on February 29.  The winners will represent Fairfax County Public Schools at the DECA State Leadership Conference in Norfolk, Virginia March 7-9.

Several marketing teachers are participating in a beta test of the Johnny Money Online Game.  The game is sponsored by NFIB Young Entrepreneur Foundation.  The beta test will take place during the month of February.  The online game helps promote entrepreneurship at the high school level and will give students hands-on experience running a virtual business and making the day-to-day decisions that small business owners face.

JANUARY 2008

The Fair Oaks Classroom-on-the-Mall students completed another successful season with the holiday gift wrap center. The gift wrap center was sponsored by Cox Communications. The mall students, in conjunction with 12 high school marketing programs, worked together to staff the center. This project netted over $17,000 for the schools that participated. The Springfield Classroom-on-the-Mall students had another successful holiday season with their student-operated Santa’s Little Helpers Store (sponsored by FATE). The store was open for children to purchase gifts for family and friends during the month of December. The marketing students purchased many of the items while on a field trip to the wholesale district in New York City.

The marketing programs in Fairfax County Public Schools have over 3200 students registered as state and national DECA members.

NOVEMBER 2007

The Marketing Advisory Board met in October. The board plans on continuing the following programs for the 2007-2008 school year: golf tournament, scholarships for seniors in marketing and EFE, fashion camp, and the sponsorship of the DECA Winner’s Breakfast. The board also approved the development of a Teacher of the Year program.

Two marketing teachers, Mary Ellen McCormick and Stephanie Thompson, received scholarships and attended the Entrepreneurship Forum sponsored by the Consortium for Entrepreneurship Education in Charleston, South Carolina on November 3 – 6, 2007. Mary Ellen McCormick was awarded a grant for $3,000 in a competition among teachers for developing an innovative entrepreneurship program. The Consortium for Entrepreneurship Education is a national membership association of 100 organizations that advocate entrepreneurship education as a lifelong learning process and provide programs for youth and adults. The conference in Charleston brought over 350 teachers together to share program ideas and establish nationwide networks.

OCTOBER 2007

The Fairfax County Public Schools DECA Leadership Conference will be held at USA Today on October 23. The event is expected to have 200 DECA student leaders in attendance. Students will have the opportunity to attend sessions covering leadership, development of a program of work, business etiquette, competitive events and promotion of their DECA Chapters.

SEPTEMBER 2007

Marketing Advisory Board (MAB) Golf Tournament
The MAB held their ninth annual MAB Golf Tournament on June 21, 2007. This year the tournament raised over $18,000. The funds will be used to recognize students’ accomplishments and achievements as well as provide scholarships to the marketing students. This year’s tournament will be held on Thursday, June 19, 2008.

MAB Fashion Camp
The fourth annual MAB Fashion Camp was held at two locations this summer--South County Secondary School and Westfield High School. More than 160 campers, ranging from 1st grade to 8th grade, participated in this week-long event. The campers participated in activities that emphasized fashion trends, etiquette, self concept and fashion design. The students planned and executed a fashion show at the end of each week. The camp counselors consisted of approximately 24 fashion marketing students from several Fairfax County high schools.

Virginia Association of Marketing Educators (VAME) Teacher of the Year
Susan Louis, a marketing teacher from Fairfax High School was selected as the VAME Teacher of the Year.

This year, DC Fashion Week invited the fashion marketing programs from Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) to attend a fashion show on September 24, 2007. Ian Williams, a local fashion designer, invited the FCPS fashion marketing students to view his COJOR International fashion show. DC Fashion Week showcases the fashion industry in the District of Columbia area.

MAY 2007

The DECA International Career Development Conference was held from April 28-May 2 in Orlando, Florida. Fifty-three marketing students from Fairfax County Public Schools were honored as finalists at this event. There were two projects that were ranked second at this conference, a Community Service Project from Fairfax High School and an E-Commerce Project from South County Secondary.

For the second year in a row, the marketing students from the Fair Oaks Classroom-on-the-Mall organized a prom dress shop. The students collected used prom dresses and accessories for the prom season. The dresses were offered for free to any student who was in need of a dress and/or accessories. The shop was extremely successful and was featured on Fox Channel 5 News.

APRIL 2007

On April 19, Chantilly High School played host to the annual Road to Nationals event. The purpose of this event is to prepare students for the DECA International Career Development Conference which will be held in Orlando, Florida April 28 - May 2. Approximately 80 marketing students from Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William Counties participated. Two hundred students from Fairfax County will be attending this conference. Students will be competing in role-play, team or written competitions.

MARCH 2007

DECA State Competition
Norfolk, Virginia was the host to the annual DECA State Leadership Conference. Approximately 550 students from Fairfax County Public Schools participated in this conference the weekend of March 9-11. Over 190 students will be representing Fairfax County and the state of Virginia at the DECA International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida at the end of April. For the second year in a row, Virginia was named as having the largest state delegation in the nation.

MAB Winners Breakfast
On March 2, the Marketing Advisory Board (MAB) hosted a breakfast to recognize the first place winners from the DECA District Competition. Over 100 students were recognized at this event. The guest speakers were Julie Lenzer Kirk, an entrepreneur who has written a book entitled, “The ParentPreneur Edge: What Parenting Teaches About Building A Successful Business” (Wiley, summer 2007) and, Tony Lafaro, a DECA Alumni from Fairfax County Public Schools.

On January 25, Marshall High School hosted the DECA District Competition. Approximately 850 Fairfax County marketing students participated in the competitive events. The purpose of these competitive events is to provide visibility for the educational goals and objectives of marketing education and provide students with an opportunity to achieve student and team recognition. The first place winners of these events will be honored at a breakfast hosted by the Marketing Advisory Board on Friday, March 2. The DECA state competition will be held in Norfolk, Virginia the weekend of March 9-11.

JANUARY 2007

Two classroom-on-the-mall programs just completed successful business ventures. The Springfield Classroom-on-the-Mall students had another successful holiday season with their student run Santa’s Little Helpers store. Santa’s Little Helpers is sponsored by Foundation for Applied Technical Education, Inc. (FATE). The store was open to children to purchase gifts for family and friends during the month of December. The Fair Oaks Classroom-on-the-Mall students completed another successful season of running the holiday gift wrap center. The mall students in conjunction with 12 high school marketing programs worked together to staff the center.

Two entrepreneurship students from Marshall Academy have advanced to the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) region wide finals with their entrepreneurship business plans.

Marketing Advisory Board (MAB) Highlights
The MAB is currently working on the following projects/committees:

• Scholarship
The board has currently designated $12,000 toward five marketing and one EFE scholarships.
• Golf Tournament
The golf tournament will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2007 at Virginia Oaks Golf Club.
• DECA
The MAB is hosting a breakfast on March 2, 2007, for first place winners at the DECA District Competitive events.
• Fashion Camp
Fashion Camp will be held at South County Secondary School and Chantilly High School this year. The dates for the camp will be July 9-13 and July 23-27, 2007. Four thousand dollars of fashion camp proceeds will be used for two fashion scholarships.

NOVEMBER 2006

The Southern Region and North Atlantic Region DECA members gathered in the nation's capital the weekend of November 3, 2006. Several Fairfax County High Schools participated in this event that focused on government, sports and entertainment, and the hospitality and fashion industries. Students and advisors participated in workshops that included leadership sessions, competitive event training and curriculum enhancements.

Ashley Elmore, a marketing teacher from Lee High School, was selected as one of ABC7 WJLA-TV Working Women of the Year. This event was sponsored by the Washington Area Toyota Dealers. This award recognizes women who have in common the capacity to care and make a positive difference in lives of other people.

OCTOBER 2006

Several high school fashion marketing programs participated in DC Fashion Week this year. Ian Williams, a local fashion designer, invited the FCPS fashion marketing students to his premiere fashion show. DC Fashion Week showcases the fashion industry in the District of Columbia area.

Approximately 140 marketing students participated in the countywide DECA Leadership Institute. DECA officers participated in four workshops. The workshops presented were DECA Officer 101, Podium Poise, Written Events and Leadership Protocol. The guest speaker was Brian Gist, DECA alumni from Robinson Secondary. Brian is the youngest regional marketing director for the McDonald’s Corporation.

SEPTEMBER 2006

MAB Golf Tournament
The MAB held their eighth annual MAB Golf Tournament on June 28, 2006. Since its inception, this annual golf tournament has raised over $144,000 for scholarships and other related opportunities for marketing students.
