High School Students
Pre-requisites:
- Algebra, Biology
- Exploring Health Sciences and Exploring the Language of Medicine are strongly recommended
Timeline:
- This is a two year “high-school extended” program.
- The first year curriculum focuses on nursing fundamentals, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, growth and development, nutrition, and introduction to pharmacology. High school juniors interested in taking this course in their senior year must submit the academy application in their junior year through their guidance counselor. This 90 minute class is held daily. Transportation may be available from the base high school to Falls Church High School Academy.
- Students successfully completing this course may be eligible to earn a Career and Technical Education Diploma seal. Students successfully completing this course (fall and spring semesters) will satisfy the sequential elective requirement for the Standard or Modified Standard diploma. This course requires a student materials fee as listed in FCPS Notice 5922. No tuition is charged for high school seniors.
- After successful completion of the full year “level one” course consisting of the fall and spring semester courses and high school graduation, the student may continue to the full-time, post-secondary (clinical) portion of the program. All requirements per the Fairfax County School of Practical Nursing Student Policy and Procedure Handbook must be met to advance to the post-graduate “level two” portion.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification may be available to qualifying high school graduates after completing a 40 hour clinical experience that is offered in the early summer after high school graduation.
- The post-secondary portion of the program is a full-time course (Monday – Friday) full days, in which students participate in clinical rotations at local hospitals and health care facilities. When not in the clinical setting “level two” students gain knowledge and skills through classroom and lab experiences under the guidance of licensed RN faculty members. The rigorous curriculum consisting of advanced nursing concepts such as medical-surgical, maternal child health, geriatrics and mental health nursing prepares the student to take the state licensing exam (NCLEX) for practical nursing. Students graduating from the Fairfax County School of Practical Nursing earn a diploma from the school of nursing.
- The post-graduate “level two” course requires student tuition and fees.
- Upon passing the NCLEX exam, graduates are able to practice nursing as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) in settings including physician offices, long term care facilities, health maintenance organizations, and hospitals.
- LPN’s are eligible for advanced placement in many registered nursing (RN) educational programs. Many health care employers also assist with tuition reimbursement of nursing tuition.
