The Fairfax County Family and Consumer Sciences Education Association (FCFCSEA) recently recognized two teachers with awards. Beverly Card from Mount Vernon High School was named FACS Teacher of the Year. Rachel VanPelt, Madison High School, received recognition as FACS New Teacher of the Year.

Roxie V. Godfrey, family and consumer sciences teacher at Mount Vernon High School, has been selected as the Virginia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher of the Year. Dr. Godfrey was formally honored at the 2009 Virginia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences State Conference, April 24th in Richmond, Virginia. She will also be honored at the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences National Conference, June 26, in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Three Fairfax Academy fashion design students are finalists for the Apple Federal Credit Union Creative Leaders Project Scholarships. In addition, a critique team of three designers recently interviewed students and nominated one showcase for the winner of the Signature Project, also related to the Apple Federal Credit Union Grant. The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony.
West Potomac Academy fashion design students presented their runway collection, All for the Love of Design, on Saturday, May 16. All garments in the collection were designed by level two students, and the show featured models from CW Television Network’s America’s Next Top Model as well as Miss Washington, D.C. 2008. The show was hosted by CW Television personality and Evolution Look owner Paul Wharton.

Fifteen family and consumer sciences (FACS) students attended the Virginia Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Conference March 26-29, 2009, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Three students brought home gold medals and two won scholarships. Numerous silver and bronze medals were also won.
The Mount Vernon High School Future Educator’s Association (FEA) attended the national FEA conference recently in Denver, Colorado and their scrapbook placed third in the national competition. Their scrapbook entries have placed in the top ten for three years in a row.
On Friday, April 17, 2009, “A Celebration of Education—Teaching Strategy Fair” was held at Mount Vernon High School for 86 Teacher Cadet students. Four teaching strategy sessions were available and the students were able to attend two of the four. The sessions included the following: Math Foldables, Nonfiction Reading Strategies, Tossing Dice and Flipping Cards, and Visual Literacy.
Four FACS teachers will be traveling to Richmond, Virginia April 23 -24, 2009, for the Virginia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Annual Conference. This year the theme of the conference is “Moving Forward. . .Looking Back.”

The West Potomac Academy (WPA) fashion design students recently attended the Embassy of Switzerland private gathering with Heart of America, Albert Uster’s pastry chefs, and DC Magazine. The WPA fashion design department was chosen as the main designer for the Heart of America “Sweet Charity” Chocolate Fashion show. Students submitted sketch designs along with professional designers, and won the opportunity to showcase their work. The winning dress design will be part of the Sweet Charity Event in May.
Some family and consumer sciences (FACS) teachers and students recently served as evaluators for national Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) in Reston. They helped determine winners of national competitive events.
Former White House pastry chef, Roland Mesnier, recently visited gourmet foods classes at Woodson High School and shared with students his expertise in making chocolate bunnies.

The Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) district competition was held on Saturday, February 7, 2009, at Glasgow Middle School. Thirty-six students competed in ten different events. There were several gold, silver, and bronze winners who may continue on to compete in the Virginia FCCLA Star Events Competition in March at Virginia Beach, Virginia.
A group of fashion design students at Fairfax Potomac Academy have been working after school, one night a week since September, designing and creating original designs for the "Beautiful Girl" number in the Fairfax High School /Academy production of "Singin’ In The Rain".
Five members of the Mount Vernon Future Educators Association attended the National FEA Conference in Denver on February 13-15, 2009. They heard two motivational speakers, Aaron Davis and Ron Clark, and attended several inspiring workshops. All five students plan to become teachers. In competition, the club extended their three-year winning streak by earning second in the highly competitive scrapbook contest. In 2007, Mount Vernon placed in the Top Ten and in 2008 they placed first.

The WPA fashion design department has been chosen as the main designer for the Heart of America “Sweet Charity” Chocolate Fashion show. Students submitted sketch designs along with professional designers, and made the cut as the headline dress for the event. The three finalist designers are all WPA students.

On Friday, November 21, 2008, West Potomac Academy fashion design students worked behind the scenes at Fashion Forward, a fashion show to benefit the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund. Students worked alongside professional designers, models, and celebrity guests, under the direction of their academy course instructor, to style and fit models, do hair and make-up, and set up backstage materials.
Four Madison High School Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members attended the national FCCLA Cluster Meeting in Providence, RI on November 14-16, 2008. Students participated in breakout sessions and learned about FCCLA opportunities.
Gourmet foods students at Madison High School recently made pumpkin pies and hosted "Pumpkin Pie Day" for the faculty and staff. Faculty members were invited to the FACS classroom for the big event where students served the pie and a hot beverage to nearly 100 faculty members.
A teacher from Mount Vernon High School has been named Virginia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher of the Year.
Several teacher cadet students, along with their teachers, will be attending the Future Educators Association (FEA) National Conference February 13-15, 2009, in Denver, Colorado. One student from Hayfield Secondary will have the opportunity to be onstage to introduce a keynote speaker.

The Assistant U.S. Secretary of Education, Stephanie Munroe, recently visited a family and consumer sciences class (FACS) at Rachel Carson Middle School. One of the classes is team taught by the FACS teacher and one of the physical education teachers with an emphasis on wellness for life. The approach is one of healthy food choices and fitness combined into one curriculum. Ms. Munroe met with students, saw them in action in the gymnasium, and observed as the students participated in a nutritional game.
On October 16, 2008, twenty-two family and consumer sciences teachers attended an evening of professional development at the Fairfax Marriott at Fair Oaks sponsored by the northern region Virginia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (VAFCS). The program for the evening was titled “Shaping the Future,” and included topics on “Healthy Housing,” “Strengths and Challenges Across Cultures,” and “The Future . . . . As If It Matters.”
The family and consumer sciences advisory board held its first meeting on October 1, 2008, at Robinson Secondary School. The group began by touring the FACS department and talking with the teachers. The business meeting was held afterwards with goals developed for the new year. Members look forward to the December luncheon meeting which will be held at Stratford University.

On September 26, 2008, West Potomac fashion design students participated in the 4th Annual “Fashion Fights Poverty” (FFP) fashion benefit at the St. Regis Hotel in Washington, D.C. The students worked alongside several celebrity guests, models and designers.
The Annandale High School culinary arts program enjoyed two winners in cake decorating event at the SkillsUSA State Fair Competition in September; Edison Academy had one winner.
Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members from Glasgow Middle School attended the Virginia State Fair during FCCLA Day.
Mount Vernon High School Future Educators Association (FEA) joined thousands across the nation to read Corduroy at Riverside Elementary School as part of Jumpstart's Read for the Record on Thursday, October 2, 2008. FEA members brought bears with them as they read to over 100 Head Start and kindergarten students. After the story, children colored a Corduroy bear to remind them of their reading experience.
Jumpstart’s Read for the Record focuses national attention on the importance of preparing children to read at an early age by organizing the world’s largest shared reading experience. The first campaign began in 2006 with volunteers reading the same book, The Little Engine That Could on the same day. Last year over 258,000 people read Ferdinand to more than 400,000 children. This year the book was Corduroy and Jumpstart hopes to set a record for the Guinness Book of World Records.
On October 14, 2008, the New England Culinary Institute provided two chef instructors to work with small groups of culinary arts students at Annandale High School.
A former Fairfax County student, who now attends Johnson & Wales University, has been visiting many of the family and consumer sciences classes giving food demonstrations. In addition, he discusses with students various career options in the food industry.

A culinary arts student from Annandale High School ranked 9th in the nation in the Hot Foods competition at the national SkillsUSA competition held in Kansas City, Kansas in June.
Fashion design students from West Potomac Academy participated in a fashion show hosted by Evelyn Brooks in Washington, D.C. The show featured new garments designed by all level 1 students.
Thirteen family and consumer sciences (FACS) teachers attended the 2008 Virginia Association for Family and Consumer Sciences (VATFACS) Professional Development Conference held in Roanoke, Virginia, August 3 – 6, 2008. Several teachers presented workshops or participated in the curriculum showcase. An FCPS FACS teacher is currently serving at the secretary of the state organization.
Two FCPS FACS teachers presented workshops at the International Federation of Home Economics World Jubilee Conference which took place in Geneva, Switzerland in June.
