Several FACS students received honors at the recent Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) state competition in Virginia Beach: Oakton High School--two gold and two silver, Herndon High School--two gold and two silver medals, Mount Vernon High School--three silver, and one bronze, and Chantilly Academy culinary students--one silver medal. For the first time ever, a middle school program, Glasgow Middle School, received three silver medals.
On Friday, April 11, 2008, “A Celebration of Education—Teaching Strategy Fair” was held at Mount Vernon High School for 65 teacher cadet students. Four teaching strategy sessions were available and the students personally chose two to attend. The sessions included the following: Math Foldables, Nonfiction Reading Strategies, Tossing Dice and Flipping Cards, and Visual Literacy.

Three students participated in the Whole Foods Culinary Cook-off Competition held at Stratford University on Tuesday, March 11, 2008. An $8000 scholarship was presented to a student from Edison Academy, $4000 was awarded to a Chantilly Academy student, and a $1000 scholarship went to an Annandale High School student.
The Little Lancer Preschool at Lee High School will be receiving a book donation from Springfield Estates Elementary School. Several early childhood careers students participate in a reading program at Springfield Estates by reading with the primary grades twice a week A kindergarten teacher at Springfield Estates won 1000 books from a Scholastic competition, and she wishes to share with the preschool.

The district FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) competition was held on February 2, 2008, at Mount Vernon High School. Several students will participate in the state STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) events competition in April in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
The Family and Consumer Sciences Advisory Board met on February 6, 2008. The board will assist, once again, with the exemplary standards review and the selection of the FACS teacher of the year. The board will also be awarding two student scholarships.
West Potomac High School Academy fashion design is the recipient of a Kids In Need Teacher Grant which provides K-12 educators with funding to provide innovative learning opportunities for their students. The Kids In Need Foundation helps to engage students in the learning process by supporting the most creative and important educational resource — the nation's teachers. Teacher Grant awards range from $100 to $500 each and are used to finance creative classroom projects. Fashion design students will use the money for their careers unit; all students will be receiving portfolio books.

The Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) Advisory Board met on December 10, 2007, at Stratford University. The board agreed to support the upcoming FCCLA District Competitions to be held on February 2, 2008, at Mount Vernon High School. In addition, they will again, in conjunction with the Fairfax County Family and Consumer Sciences Education Association, choose the FACS teacher of the year and the FACS new teacher of the year.
Beverly Card of Mount Vernon High School is the proud recipient of a Washington Post grant. Mrs. Card wrote the grant titled, Teen Parents Excel, to provide networking and educational learning opportunities for pregnant teens and their parents.

Three family and consumer sciences (FACS) teachers were recently involved in helping the Virginia Department of Education write updates to the FACS middle school curriculum.
The Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) state leadership training took place in Lynchburg, Virginia, on October 29 -30, 2007. Several students and three FACS teachers traveled to Lynchburg to participate.

Students from Edison Academy Culinary Arts classes placed 1st in the knife skills competition and 4th in the cake decorating competition at the SkillsUSA Virginia State Fair Competition.
Twenty family and consumer sciences teachers (FACS) attended the northern region Virginia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (VAFCS) on October 18, 2007, at the Fair Oaks Marriott Hotel. The theme of the meeting was “Leading the Way to a New Tomorrow.” Experts spoke on nutrition profiling, sensitizing children to aging, and consumer debt and the financial impact on Wall Street.
The Family and Consumer Sciences Advisory Board held its first meeting of the year on October 3, 2007. The board recommended that the Interior and Commercial Design course be added as a new course. Goals that were established last spring were reviewed.

Nineteen FACS teachers attended the 2007 Virginia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (VATFACS) Professional Development Conference in Virginia Beach, VA on July 29-August 1, 2007. The theme of the conference was “Healthy U.” Workshops focused on being healthy in both personal and professional life.
In addition, Marcia Andere, Food Service Director for Flik International @ Freddie Mac and a member of the FACS Advisory Board, was the recipient of the VATFACS Business Partnership Award. The award was presented during the VATFACS Conference in Virginia Beach. Flik International is the business partner of Herndon High School’s FACS department.

The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) and the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington Education Foundation (RAMW-EF) partnered to bring a student culinary skills development program to students of Northern Virginia. The special “CIA Day” was held on May 2 at Annandale High School. Several schools from the region brought students for the day.

Herndon High School's (HHS) Family, Careers, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) partnered with the Drama Booster Club to present the recent HHS Dinner Theatre . About 100 parents and community members were treated to a delicious dinner before the play. Flik International, an HHS family and consumer sciences (FACS) business partner, sent three chefs who helped students prepare and plate the Italian-inspired meal.

Thirty-nine culinary arts students from Fairfax County, Arlington, and Alexandria recently competed in the regional SkillsUSA Competition at Stratford University. Chantilly Academy took first place in three events and Annandale High School took first place in one. The winners will go to the national competition in Kansas City, Missouri in June.
Eighth grade students from the Franklin Middle School FACS program were recently featured on Good Morning Washington. They were chosen to be on the program because of their “bear service” project. Students made teddy bears which were donated to Fairfax Inova for heart patients.
Mount Vernon High School has been selected to receive a $2,500 Best Buy Teach Award based on the application submitted by one of the family and consumer sciences teachers. The teacher requested funds in order to purchase additional digital cameras, scanners, flash drives, and discs for the program. Through the technology project she submitted in her application, students would gain the skills to generate a quality ePortfolio to use as they apply for child care jobs, colleges, and scholarships.

The Family and Consumer Sciences Advisory Board met on December 6, 2006, at Marshall High School. Three new members were welcomed. The board agreed to support the upcoming district (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) competition to be held at Herndon High School on January 20, 2007. Planning was conducted for the 2007 Teacher of the Year Awards and the FACS Scholarship to be given in June. The board is reviewing the early childhood careers curriculum and will bring recommendations to the February board meeting.

The articulation agreement between Falls Church High School culinary arts and Johnson & Wales University was recently renewed for another two-year term.
Two family and consumer sciences (FACS) teachers are on mission to Russia with 20 others representing the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS). While there they will be visiting FACS programs and teachers in various school settings.

The Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) Advisory Board met on October 4, 2006. The Board set and approved several goals for the year to include the following:
• Continue the Family and Consumer Sciences Advisory Board scholarship
• Assist the Fairfax County Family and Consumer Sciences Education Association (FCFCSEA) with selection of the Teacher and New Teacher of the Year
• Assist with the local FCCLA district competition
• Review and approve local curriculum—the International Foods and Hospitality
Curriculum is currently undergoing evaluation
Five FCPS FACS teachers attended the Northern Region Virginia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (VAFCS) Fall Conference held on October 19, 2006, at the Fairfax Marriott at Fair Oaks. The theme for the event was “Surviving in Threatening Times.” Guest speakers included Nancy Bock, Vice President, Education, for The Soap and Detergent Association, who spoke about the “Importance of Hygiene to Health in Threatening Times.” Jean Edelman, President of Edelman Business Services and co-founder with husband, Ric Edelman, of the Edelman Financial Center, presented “Finding Strength and Composure in an Ever Changing World.” The third speaker was Carolyn Jackson, Transitional Director of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) whose topic was “Transforming AAFCS: New Era of Action.”

Twenty family and consumer sciences (FACS) teachers attended Science in the Kitchen training at Stratford University during the summer. Topics included: science behind food preparation and evaluation, food preservation and food additives, egg and its emulsifying qualities, brining and marinating, baking dimensions, pH, osmosis, and strength of different starches and their reheating qualities.
Four FACS teachers attended the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) 97th Annual Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina. The theme of the conference was LifeSkills! Solutions for Thriving in Threatening Times. Approximately 1,000 professionals met to present their research and successful strategies in preparing for and coping with today’s emotional, physical, and financial threats. The meeting featured a variety of sessions on topics such as workplace wellness, disaster preparation, and identity theft prevention.
The Virginia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (VATFACS) annual conference was held in Virginia Beach, Virginia, during the first week of August. Thirteen FACS teachers participated. One FCPS FACS teacher was named Outstanding New FACS Educator and one was elected to a state officer position.
The Alpha Delta Kappa Southeastern Regional Excellence in Education Award was presented to a Mt. Vernon High School FACS teacher at the annual southeastern regional conference held recently in Asheville, North Carolina.
