SEPTEMBER 2009

Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL), the largest and oldest student business organization, held its National Leadership Conference at Anaheim Convention Center,
June 25–28.  Conference participants from around the country, were in attendance for this conference and the FBLA-PBL Institute for Leaders. Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) sent 40 students where some received national recognition at the FBLA Awards of Excellence on June 28.

Twenty-seven teachers attended the career and technical education state conference in Richmond.  Several teachers were installed as state officers on the VBEA Board of Directors, and  Mary Lewis from Centreville High School was awarded a professional scholarship.  Teachers had the opportunity to attend numerous training sessions during the three-day conference. 

MAY 2009

Industry Certification Testing
Business students and teachers have been finishing up the industry certification testing in a variety of areas.  For the first time, students took the NOCTI Accounting test countywide.  Prometric Testing centers are now operational in the three IT Academies.

Awards and Recognition
The Annual Business Education Teachers Association Spring Awards ceremony was held in early May.  Janice Findley, Chantilly High School, received the Outstanding Business Teacher Award and will represent Fairfax County in the State awards program in August.  One business student received an outstanding business student scholarship

FBLA
Mount Vernon FBLA is holding an end-of-year courtyard celebration to recognize FBLA officers and competitive events participants.

Annandale FBLA held an end-of-year barbeque to honor officers, seniors and competitive events participants.  In addition, the Annandale chapter recognized Twinkle Maan for receiving the Business Education Association of Fairfax County Outstanding Business Student award.  Jackson Middle School FBLA increased membership three-fold by inviting 8th graders, who participated in the schoolwide fund-raiser in the fall, to apply for membership.  The officers for next year have already been elected and a 7th grade recruitment plan is in place.
West Potomac FBLA has been busy serving as ambassadors for the Passport to Success Mini Conference.  FBLA members worked with the Student Government Association on the school blood drive.  David Aramony, FBLA Regional Vice President, received the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce Scholarship.

APRIL 2009

The Economics Challenge is a national competition sponsored by the National Council for Economics Education and Goldman Sachs and held on April 1, 2009.  The two finalist teams were from Marshall High School.  The winning team will advance to the regional finals in Atlanta on April 27, 2009.
 
The FBLA state conference was held last weekend in Reston, VA.  One hundred thirty-five students and advisers attended the conference.  Vimal Nair from Robinson Secondary was elected state president.  In addition, Fairfax County students placed in the top five in over 50 events.  Of those 50 events, 26 students are eligible for national competition in June. 

MARCH 2009

The Northern Virginia Regional Future Business Leaders of American (FBLA) Conference was held on March 9, 2009, at George Mason University.  Over 300 students and advisers attended the awards ceremony.  The 2009-10 regional officers were elected and first, second, and third place winners for each event were recognized.  Students competed in a variety of events from Accounting to Network Design.  The eligible winners in each category will represent Fairfax County at the State competition in April.

Marshall High School students participated in the Life Smarts state competition in Richmond.  Students competed in an online test to earn a space at the State competition.  This is Marshall’s third year competing.

Centreville High School’s virtual enterprise class participated in the state trade fair in Virginia Beach on March 19.  Students set up trade booths and sold items from their virtual business.  They also competed in a variety of team events held during the day.

FEBRUARY 2009

As part of the Career and Technical recruitment efforts by Oakton CTE teachers, the department issued “passports” to the guidance staff.  The CTE teachers and students had activities and projects in each classroom at Oakton High School to showcase the classes in each program area.  At each “destination,” the counselors received a stamp and prizes were given at the end. 

Chantilly network administration students have been treated to a series of visits from members of the Network Solutions staff.  Staff members have spoken to the class on a variety of topics related to network administration.  Following the presentations, the students had the opportunity to build a web site. Network Solutions provided coupons for all members of the network administration class (1 and 2) for a one-year subscription to obtain a domain name, and host a web site along with the tools for building a web site courtesy of Network Solutions.

The Regional President for the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and a junior at Robinson Secondary School, spoke at the School Board meeting on February 5.  He spoke in connection with CTE month and talked about his experiences with Career and Technical Education and the related student organizations.

FBLA members took part in the online testing events and the performance events during the last two weeks.  The results will be announced at the FBLA Regional Conference at George Mason University on March 9. 

JANUARY 2009

Business and information technology teachers and students will be preparing for FBLA competitions in February and March.  In addition, they are preparing recruitment materials for students registering for the 2009-10 school year.

FBLA members donated $1,000 in Target gift cards to the Association for the Support of Children with Cancer (ASK).  The gift cards were part of a statewide effort to provide items for the families of children at the Medical College of Virginia.  The Lee High School chapter sponsored a toy/supply drive for ASK.  Chapters throughout Fairfax County collected toys and supplies for ASK and brought them to Lee High School in early December.  This activity is an FBLA community service project.

Marshall High School has a student participating in the Women in Technology mentor program.  Program participants will meet at Northrop Grumman, and attend training sessions and meet with an individual mentor.

NOVEMBER 2008

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) students attend the National Fall leadership conference in Washington, D.C. November 14 -15.  Students attended leadership sessions and participated in team building activities. 

November is National Business Education Month.  Schools will be participating with a variety of activities and events.  Many schools planned activities with elementary and middle schools for American Enterprise Day, November 15.

OCTOBER 2008

The Future Business Leaders of America held the annual Fall Regional Conference at Marymount University on October 14, 2008.  Approximately 350 members and advisers were in attendance.  Dean Reyerson from the business school was the keynote speaker.  Students attended workshops related to dress for success, ice breakers, team building, and competitions.  Participants enjoyed a wonderful meal and the experience of being on a college campus.

Students enrolled in the Chantilly Network Administration and Cisco classes may elect to earn college credit through a dual enrollment program with Northern Virginia Community College.

SEPTEMBER 2008

Seventeen students traveled to Atlanta, Georgia in June to complete at the National Leadership Conference.  The program included training session, competitions and leadership development seminars.  Awards were won in the following areas:

Banking & Financial Systems
Client Service
Cyber Security
Future Business Leader
Internet Application Programming

In August, Fairfax County Public Schools hosted the Virginia Business Education Association Conference.  Over 250 business educators came from across the state to participate.  Herndon High School hosted the technology sessions.  Teachers were very impressed with the facility and technology expertise of the Fairfax program.  The highlight of the conference was Jessica Landon, Key Middle School, being named the Al Roane Middle School Business Teacher of the Year. 

In addition, the Annandale High School (Atom) branch of Apple Federal Credit Union (Apple FCU) was named 2007-2008 Branch of the Year.  This is the second year for Annandale to receive this honor.  In addition to receiving a plaque, Apple FCU gave the Atom Branch a $200 check to donate to their program of choice.  The $200 was given to the FBLA chapter at Annandale High School.

Falls Church High School reopened the Jaguar Branch of the Apple Federal Credit Union this month.  CTE staff members look forward to the convenient location.
