Fairfax Academy hosted the student kick-off program for the Creative Leaders Project on Thursday, September 25th. Entitled ‘Creative Leaders 101’, students completed a Leadership Skills Self-Assessment and participated in a Communication & Leadership Skills session hosted by Jennell Evans, President and CEO of Strategic Interactions, Inc. Students also heard keynote speaker, Judson Laipply, an inspirational humorist and YouTube celebrity known for his “Evolution of Dance” video, he spoke about “Life is Change.” Afternoon activities included guest speakers, a film challenge, a musical jam session, mock-interview role playing workshop, choreography led by second year students, and a very creative public speaking exercise.
The exploring language of medicine and exploring health sciences students from the West Potomac Academy visited INOVA Fairfax Hospital and viewed an open heart surgery in the surgical observation dome.
The hotel marketing students at Marshall Academy began year-long internships at the Tysons Corner Marriott and Sheraton Premiere hotels in October. Both properties held professional orientation sessions for the students and have begun training with the hotel staffs. Students will begin the second year in partnership with the Ritz-Carlton Tysons in early November.
Edison Academy held training for 86 Student Ambassadors to be the voices and faces of Edison Academy. Students learned how to present to the public, speak about the opportunities within the academy, and welcome guests to the school.
Over 150 Edison High School/Academy students participated in a career workshop entitled, “Packing Your Suitcase”. Students learned about time management and organizational skills using hands-on activities to help them achieve their educational and career goals.
Edison Academy transported 150 students to the Virginia State Fair to observe and compete in SkillsUSA contests. Edison students earned 1st place in the Heating Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration competition, and 4th in the Culinary Arts Cake Decorating Contest. Students also competed in Culinary Knife Skills and Automotive Collision repair contests.
Chantilly Academy hosted a one-day Engineering Expo and Engineering College Fair for students throughout the county. Representatives from colleges and industry discussed the opportunities in the engineering profession. Chantilly welcomed more than 600 students in grades 7-12 to hear presentations from Kenneth Ledbetter, Science Mission Directorate Chief Engineer at NASA headquarters, the University of Maryland’s 2007 International Solar Decathlon Leaf House team, the Society of Women Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Virginia Council on Advanced Technology Skills. Area corporate exhibitors included Micron Technology Inc. and Northrop Grumman. The Engineering College Fair included engineering school faculty, staff, and students from George Mason University, James Madison University, Northern Virginia Community College, George Washington University, University of Maryland-College Park, Old Dominion University, Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Sweet Briar College.
