The Chantilly Academy received several honors at the Regional FIRST Robotics Competition held in Cleveland, Ohio.  The team won the top three awards presented among 46 teams in competition.  Chantilly received the Regional Chairman’s Award which is FIRST’s most prestigious award honoring the team that best represents a model for others.  The Woodie Flowers Award went to the Robotics Team sponsor and Chantilly instructor, Marty Rothwell for demonstrating outstanding excellence in teaching science, math, and creative design.  The Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Buyers Entrepreneurship Award recognized the students’ exceptional work in developing a comprehensive business plan.

On April 18, the Edison Academy hosted visitors from the Department of Defense, Young Government Leaders Program, and research analysts from New Paradigm to conduct a focus group discussion on the future workforce in Information Technology.  Students from various technology classes participated in the discussions about designing a workplace that reflects the needs and wants of the “Net Generation.” 

On April 11, the MITRE Corporation hosted the second annual “Young Women in Engineering” event for middle and high school girls interested in learning about careers available in the field of engineering.  Students heard motivational presentations by top female leaders in the MITRE organization.  They also toured three areas of MITRE which included flying in an aviation simulator, visiting a Bio/Nanotechnology lab, and hearing from a legal computer hacker.
