Student Experiences
A one-day seminar, “21st Century Careers in Medicine & Health Sciences,” was held on Wednesday, March 14 for all dental careers, medical technology, and pharmacy technician students. Chantilly Academy engineering students and Chantilly High School AP chemistry students also participated in the workshop offerings in Pharmacogenomics, Health Promotion as a Career, Forensics, Medical Science Research: From the Bench to Market, Biomedical Engineering, Pathways to Undergraduate Studies in Heath Sciences – and “The Promise of Stem Cell Research.” Speakers included representatives from the National Naval Medical Center, United Negro College Fund, George Washington University School (GWU) of Engineering and Applied Science, GWU School of Medicine & Health Sciences, and George Mason University.

Twenty-eight Chantilly Academy hospitality management students and three faculty members traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada, January 25 – 28. Their tour of this major hospitality business hub included visits to the University of Nevada – Las Vegas Harrah Hotel Management School; Nevada Partners – an industry/government/union hotel training center; and two major resorts Paris Las Vegas and Rio Las Vegas where students experienced “behind the scenes” operations. The field trip to Las Vegas included a tour of the Hoover Dam.

George Washington University lead faculty in Cyber-Security/Information Assurance, Professor Poora Voori has presented four modules in this technology to students in network administration during the month of March.

West Potomac Academy students in music and computer technology, in partnership with Fairfax Public Access, and WEBR; will begin to produce and air their original music on a radio show weekly on Tuesdays from 8-9 a.m.

Pimmit Hills hosted a Health Career Fair for students on February 28 with over 200 student participants. Students had their hearing and vision checked by local, professional volunteers. Students also had the opportunity to hear about a variety of affordable health services available from over 20 guest speakers.

Scholarships
The McLean Rotary and the Rotary Club of Dunn Loring interviewed and awarded scholarships to nine Pimmit Hills students. Scholarship awards totaled $7,250.00. The winners were also honored at luncheons sponsored by the Rotary Clubs.

Student Competition
Eleven students from the West Potomac Academy (WPA) participated in the state HOSA competition March 2-4. The WPA students placed in the top five in the areas of; dental, pharmacy technician, medical health technologies, and physical therapy/occupational therapy.

Teacher Recognition
Bette Weese, medical health technology teacher at Chantilly Academy, has been named Educator of the Year by the Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Weese, a registered nurse, volunteers her time weekly at a local hospital’s emergency room.

Awards
West Potomac Academy received a Best Buy Teach Award for $2,500. The money will be used for a variety of technology initiatives to prepare students entering career fields.
