Over 150 students from high schools and academies throughout Fairfax County participated in the 2007 Groundhog Job Shadow Day sponsored by the Northern Virginia Technology Council and Junior Achievement of the National Capital Area. Students shadowed professionals in the fields of information technology, human resources, banking, engineering, web design, software development, security, television production, and many more. In order to participate, students completed an application, submitted a teacher recommendation, and created a resume for their shadow host.

Over 60 students from the six academies in Fairfax County participated in the federal government shadow day for professionals in information technology. Each academy was partnered with a specific government agency which hosted up to 20 students per site. Agencies that partnered with Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) included: State Department, Veteran Affairs-Office of Information Technology, Department of Defense (DoD)/Army, Veteran Affairs Medical Center, Department of the Treasury, DoD/Washington Headquarters Services, and DoD/Air Force. Students received a firsthand look at the inner operations of a government agency, toured secured government locations, and gathered tips on applying for a job with the federal government.

Two FCPS students from Marshall Academy were chosen as finalists at the annual Washington Area Student Business Plan Competition sponsored by the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). The students first shared their business plans in a class competition, and then submitted them to the NFTE competition. Two submissions from Marshall were selected to be part of the top 16 business plans from the Washington metropolitan area in a field of 50. The competition narrowed to six students, who presented their business plans to a panel of 13 area businesspeople, entrepreneurs, and investors.

All medical courses at the West Potomac Academy, which include; OT/PT, dental careers, pharmacy tech, and medical health technologies, completed CPR training under the direction of Mary Conklu, certified CPR Instructor and OT/PT teacher.

Thirty Sports and Entertainment Marketing students from Herndon High School received a behind-the-scenes tour of the Washington Capitals/Wizards headquarters and training facility. Students heard about opportunities with these local sports teams in the areas of marketing, sales, training, recruiting, and facility maintenance.

Internships
Seven students from Edison Academy’s Auto Technology and Auto Collision classes applied and interviewed for the Fairfax County Government Department of Vehicle Service’s internships. Four students were offered and accepted internship positions for the remainder of the 2007 school year.

Special Projects
The new 2007 Career and Technical Education calendar is complete. The 2007 calendar highlights the successes of former CTE students who have continued school and work in the same career field studied in high school. Some of the careers highlighted in this year’s calendar are; firefighter, IT technician, elementary teacher, policeman, automotive systems technician, and mechanical engineer. The Virginia Career Education Foundation (VCEF) prints and pays for a copy of the custom FCPS calendar to be given to every 9th grade student in the county.
