Student Experiences
Over eighty students from the West Potomac Academy participated in a fieldtrip to New York to explore the television, music technology, dance, and dental industries. Some of the sites visited were Sony Studios, Museum of Movies and Film, Art and Dental Schools, Broadway Performance, and Ground Zero. Dance students also participated in Master Dance Class sponsored by the Broadway Dance Center.

Over 40 TV Production students attended the Government Video & Technology Expo held at the Washington Convention Center in December. This was an opportunity for students to experience a professional industry exhibition, and see first-hand the latest technology trends. All students were given assigned booths to visit, were guided on questions to ask, and then presented the information the following week in class. In addition, students visited with other industry companies of interest and viewed films selected for DC film festivals.

Business/Educational Partnerships
On Tuesday, January 23, two female MIT Engineering students began a week-long series of workshops in the National Capital Area to encourage 7th – 12th grade girls in engineering education and careers. Chantilly High School Academy coordinated a successful nine-school application to MIT’s Women’s Initiative Program that is enabling 500 girls in Fairfax County, Montgomery County and the District of Columbia to participate in workshops during the weeklong visit.

After completing training from the Red Cross, West Potomac Academy students in pharmacy tech and PT/OT formed a newly established Red Cross Club in conjunction with a budding partnership with the American Red Cross of the National Capital Area.

Events
Fairfax and Edison academies hosted their annual Alumni Career Day programs by opening their doors to over 60 former students who returned to share experiences with current academy students. Throughout the day, the alumni discussed life beyond high school both in college and work settings, and shared examples of their recent creative work. Teachers enjoyed re-connecting with their students and learning about the demands of college majors, internships and professional work in their disciplines.

West Potomac Academy TV production students held their first annual Student Fall Film Festival where they shared their first major productions of the year. Awards were given to best editing, script and overall picture.

Internships
Edison Academy placed their first student for an internship/apprenticeship in automotive repair with the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, supporters of the Mt Vernon estate. The internship experience will begin in January and run through May of the 2007 school year. Another intern position in electrical trades will begin in February.

Fairfax County Public Schools’ Department of Information Technology has hired 11 new interns for the 2007 school year. Students from Chantilly, Edison, Fairfax, and Marshall academies will shadow FCPS employees in the areas of Consulting and Assessing, Technology Support Services, Multimedia Design Services, Photography, Network Engineering and Network Systems Support, Digital Media Production, IT Customer Service, and Desktop Management. Students took part in a job fair with the various offices in the IT department, submitted applications, resumes, and completed a one-on-one interview to be considered for an internship position. This internship opportunity will run from February – May and can continue through the summer depending on student performance and office need.

Outreach
Fairfax Academy has implemented a Student Ambassador program this year, involving 60 current Academy students. Ambassadors have attended training sessions, introduced college and career speakers, assisted with Alumni Career Day, and hosted visitors to their classes. In the coming months, they will be involved in various outreach efforts both at the Academy and at their base schools, to help promote Fairfax Academy programs and activities.
