Student Experiences
Chantilly, Edison, and Marshall Academy students taking Electrical Construction and Engineering, Network Administration, Database Design & Management, Engineering Systems, and Air Force Junior ROTC participated in the 51st Annual Air Traffic Controller Association’s Conference on Monday, October 30 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC. Students and faculty visited with leading air traffic control technology systems manufacturers on the industry trade show floor and participated in a presentation on careers in air transportation systems produced by representatives from Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Reagan National Airport, and other companies in the industry.

Fairfax Academy has established a new Academy Ambassadors program. This fall, the academy counselor and career experience specialist have trained 58 students representing all nine programs of the Academy. The students assisted with Back-To-School Night, and have been introducing all guest speakers for both classroom and Academywide programs. As the year progresses, Ambassadors will have a prominent role in open houses, elective fairs, base school presentations, and other Academy events. Training so far has included business introductions and basic public speaking techniques.

Graphics students from West Potomac Academy went on an overnight field trip to New York City where they focused on college and career enrichment experiences including visits to the School of Visual Arts and Art Institute of NY. Students were given tours, individualized portfolio reviews, and had dialogue with current college students on their real-life experiences in the field. They also visited the Sony Wonder Tech Lab where they received hands-on workshops with digital technology.

Business/Educational Partnerships
Navy Federal Credit Union staff visited Edison Academy for two days to present an interactive, personal financial responsibility workshop to 391 students. The Credit Union is also participating in an Academy-sponsored workshop for freshman high school students that introduces them to the financial realities of living and working in the "real" world.

Graphics students from West Potomac Academy (WPA) showcased an exhibit of their work at Stratford University on November 8. Students displayed their work and received feedback from the Digital Design Professors from the University. Parents and school administrators viewed student creations while enjoying refreshments provided by the culinary students at Stratford. Tthe WPA student work may be viewed on the Stratford University website.

TV Production students from Fairfax Academy volunteered at the Cox Communications booth at the Wolf Trap International Children’s Festival in September. Through the magic of video, they were able to tape children having a conversation with themselves.

Publications
“Beyond Robotics” an article co-authored by Beth Tally, special education teacher at the Chantilly Academy, and Nate Laverdure, a 2006 graduate of the Chantilly Academy engineering program appears in the Association for Career and Technical Education’s November/December 2006 issue of Techniques magazine. Chantilly High School Academy Robotics Team Number 612 is an award-winning team of high school students actively involved with FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a multinational nonprofit organization that inspires students to transform culture—making science, math, engineering and technology as cool for kids as sports are today.
