Student Experiences
Eight students from the cosmetology program at Chantilly Academy went to the national SkillsUSA competition in June 2006. Over 4,700 students attended the event from 50 states and competed in 84 skill and leadership competitions. Chantilly students brought home a “2nd Place in the Nation” in cosmetology as well as four other placements in the top 20.

Fairfax Academy dance students were invited to perform for the FCPS Instructional Services “State of the Department” meeting on September 20. The group performed to a medley of movie themes in keeping with the location of the meeting, which was held at a local movie theatre. All choreography and dance moves were created and learned in the first two weeks of school; it was the first time this particular group of advanced dancers had performed together.

Edison Academy, together with the FCPS Office of Facilities Management, will sponsor a “Career Trades Information Night” on September 28, at 7:00 p.m. Information will include internship opportunities through the academy programs and apprenticeships available with the Office of Facilities Management.

Internship Opportunities
Fairfax County’s Department of Vehicle Services (DVS) has begun its eighth year as an internship host to FCPS automotive students. The department will offer 20 internship positions this year with the internship lasting from January 2007-May 2007. Interested students will visit the four DVS work sites on a field trip and hear presentations at their school by a DVS Supervisor on the career opportunities in DVS. Students are also given the opportunity to obtain full-time work in the summer after graduation and even a permanent position with the country depending on job performance.

Fairfax County Public Schools’ Department of Information Technology (DIT) has also kicked off its eighth
year of providing internship opportunities for FCPS students. The DIT internship positions are open to junior and senior students currently attending FCPS high schools and academies. Interested students may attend a DIT internship job fair on November 2, 2006, from 3:30 to 5:30 pm, at Marshall High School where they will have a chance to meet with representatives.

Fairfax Academy
The 2006 Senior Survey results show that 96% of Fairfax Academy’s 2006 graduates are continuing their education this fall at four-year (78%), two-year (16%), and Professional/Technical schools (2%). More than half of these students (56%) indicated that their intended college major would be related to their Academy program, including 40% who indicated their intended major would be closely related to their Academy studies. Thirty-six of those Fairfax Academy seniors pursuing majors related to their Academy programs reported academic scholarship awards totaling $642,850.

2006 Tech Adventure Camp
The ninth annual Tech Adventure Camp for middle school students was held in July. Three hundred students participated in a two-week summer camp filled with activities allowing them to explore various career fields while using technology applications.

During the camp, students were able to explore the world of forensics, create a virtual home site using the CAD software, Extreme Design-Home Edition, combine their artistic creativity with technology to design and create their own animated displays in “Computer Animation”, prepare foods ranging from orange smoothies for breakfast to “bird nest” cookies for dessert, and much more.

MAB Fashion Camp
The third annual MAB Fashion Camp was held at two locations this summer--South County Secondary School and Westfield High School. More than 130 campers, ranging from first grade to eighth grade participated in this week-long event. The campers participated in activities that emphasized fashion trends, etiquette, self concept, and fashion design. The students planned and executed a fashion show at the end of each week. The camp counselors consisted of approximately 24 fashion marketing students from several Fairfax County high schools.
