APPLICATION PROCESS FOR HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMY
AND OTHER SPECIALIZED COURSES
The school counselor will submit a packet of information for each applicant including:
- MUST be completed and submitted in order to enroll a student in a high school academy or career and technical education program away from the base school.
- A parent signature is not required on the application. Counselors should complete the form promptly after receiving parental approval.
- Students should indicate a second and third choice if they are willing to enroll in another available course in the event their first choice has no vacancy. In cases where the number of requests exceeds available seats, certain students will be given preference. Juniors will be given preference over seniors in sequential courses (i.e. Professional Television Production 1 & 2, Culinary Arts 1 & 2, etc.), and seniors will be given preference over juniors in courses that do not have a second level (i.e. Construction Management, IT Seminar, etc.).
- ALL requested information should be provided on the application form: student ID number, designation for the appropriate location, counselor signature, date, etc. Please note: if no selection is made next to “Transportation Requested” it may be assumed that the student does not need transportation.
- E-mail addresses for both student and guardian are especially helpful as this is an important communication tool for the academies as schedules are developed.
Student Transcript (including current year’s semester grades)
Current Year’s SASI Period Attendance / Days of Activity
Student’s Personal Statement (pdf 15kb)
- All students MUST write and submit a personal statement (one paragraph) describing their interest, experiences, and goals as they relate to the course for which they are applying.
- Students are encouraged to refer to the guidelines on the form to write the statement.
- The content of the statement is the most important consideration (as opposed to grammar and spelling). Please make sure it is legible if it is handwritten. The paragraph should not exceed 350 words.
- Additional documents may be included for any applicant and must be included for students not meeting course prerequisites. These could include a letter of recommendation from a school staff member or a student portfolio (especially helpful for students applying to academy courses in communications or the arts.)
Additional Documents:
Completed application packets (include all required documents, items one through four above) should IMMEDIATELY be sent to the appropriate location for the selected course. APPLICATION PACKETS MUST BE RECEIVED BY MARCH 31, 2009.
