Art of Lettering
Grades 7-9 (#IFT5013)
Grades 10-12 (#IFT5016)
Discover the art of hand lettering, calligraphy, icon creation, and original typography design. Projects will include logo, illustrations, and basic design principles.


 

Jewelry
Grades 7-9 (#IFT6013)
Design and create beautiful jewelry using a variety of traditional and nontraditional materials, including polymer clay, wire, paper, reeds, and beads.

Cartooning Basics
Grades 7-8 (#IFT5112)
Grades 9-12 (#IFT5115)

Prerequisite: Foundations of Drawing.
Explore basic cartooning skills needed for comic strip design, comic page layout, and caricature development; includes story writing, editing, and cell development. No anime or manga. Original thinking, sketchbook, and homework are required.

 

Jewelry and Metals
Grades 10-12 (#IFT6016)
Design and create stunning jewelry from brass, copper, new gold, and wire. The course covers traditional tools and techniques from forming pewter with student designed molds to the enameling process and more.

 

Cartooning: Beyond the Basics
Grades 9-12 (#IFT5154)
Prerequisite: Cartooning Basics or portfolio review.
Prepare original cartoon strips using line and color rendering beyond the basics. Learn to invent new characters and caricature.

 

Media Mania
Grades 7-8 (#IFT6115)
Explore four media styles through hands-on activities to experience the expressive potential of each: drawing, printmaking, painting, and sculpture.

Cartooning-Advanced
Grades 9-12 (#IFT5164)
Prerequisite: Cartooning: Beyond the Basics or portfolio review.
Expand your personal drawing style with the use of Photo Elements software. Produce complete storyboarding with full character development. In addition to developing an original comic character and a fully developed comic strip, advanced students will complete a portfolio ready 3-D or animated cartoon. Photoshop experience is preferred.


 

Painting I

Explore possibilities of water-based painting mediums while studying composition, value, color, materials, and techniques. Paint a variety of subjects from the figure to still life.




Ceramics I
Grades 7-8 (#IFT5212)
Grades 9-12 (#IFT5215)
Get your hands in clay. In this beginning class, students learn coil, slab, and pinch hand-building techniques, as well as the pottery wheel while developing personal imagery through experience with clay.

 

Painting II
Grades 8-9 (#IFT6222)
Grades 10-12 (#IFT6226)

Prerequisite: Painting I.
Increase knowledge and experience with water-based paint. Stretch a canvas and choose painting subjects. Explore limited palettes, complex composition, and chiaroscuro.

Ceramics II
Grades 9-12 (#IFT5254)
Prerequisite: Ceramics I or portfolio review.
Students who have the necessary skills and knowledge in hand-building and wheel throwing will refine their technique in clay. Emphasis is placed on design and execution of more complicated pieces.

 

Pastels
Grades 7-8 (#IFT6312)
Grades 9-12 (#IFT6316)
Understand the basic concepts and techniques using pastel mediums (oil pastels, conté chalk, etc.). Explore subjects, textures, papers, and techniques.

Computer Animation–Advanced
Grades 10-12 (#IFT5566)
Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.
Students will create original characters and environments to use for 2-D and 3-D animations. Students will learn to use Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Flash to create 2-D animations. Bryce will also be used to learn 3-D modeling, rendering, and animation.


 

Pastel Projects and Advanced Techniques
Grades 9-12 (#IFT6325)
Prerequisite: Pastels or portfolio review
Develop personal style and a deeper understanding of the media working with a wide variety of subject matter.



Computer GraphicsIntroduction
Grades 7-8 (#IFT5312)
Grades 9-12 (#IFT5315)
Learn to work with Adobe Photoshop, a scanner, a digital camera, and a printer to create a variety of meaningful 2D images. Draw from observation using the mouse; alter digital images by changing yourself into an alien, super hero, or superstar. Design business cards, greeting cards, computer and video game covers, or CD jewel cases.

 

Photography I
Grades 10-12 (#IFT6416)
Use a 35mm camera and develop an artist's eye for composition; process black and white film; make enlargements. Photographic process and creative expression are emphasized. Students must provide a 35mm camera and film.


Computer GraphicsAdvanced
Grades 8-12 (#IFT5365)
Prerequisite: Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator or portfolio review

Learn to use Bryce, a 3D imaging program, to create an interior space or an outdoor city scene. Class includes an introduction to animation.

 

Photography II (new for 2008)
Grades 11-12 (#IFT6420)
Prerequisite: Photography I or portfolio review.
Continuation of Photography I with emphasis on creativity and dark room techniques. Students must provide a 35mm manual camera and black and white film.

Computer Graphic Design
Grades 9-12 (#IFT5415)
Prerequisite: Computer Graphics or portfolio review
Create logos, ads, posters, and web sites using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Students use professional graphic design software to solve problems of the graphic designer.

 

Photo Lab and Digital Photography
Grades 10-12 (#IFT6556)
Prerequisite: Photography or HS equivalent or portfolio review
Learn digital photography techniques with emphasis on creativity. Basic working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop preferred. Students must provide a digital camera.

Crafts by Design
Grades 7-8 (#IFT5512)
Grades 9-12 (#IFT5515)
Contemporary trends in arts and crafts are covered. Students enhance their knowledge and experiment with approaches and media. Sample products include papermaking, decoupage, and mosaic.

 

Printmaking
Grades 10-12 (#IFT6715)
The world has gone digital, but there are great qualities in the age old processes of printmaking.  Explore three printmaking processes: monotype, reduction, and silkscreen.  The result will be multiples of prints on a variety of surfaces.

Experimental Drawing
Grades 10-12 (#IFT5656)
Prerequisite: Foundations of Drawing
This class is designed for the experienced student to build on basic drawing concepts. A multimedia approach helps students gain confidence with varied materials and techniques.

 

Sculpture
Grades 7-8 (#IFT6612)
Grades 9-12 (#IFT6615)
Explore imaginative methods and materials to realize work from your vision. Create sculpture using plaster, wood, wire, and styrofoam. Basic concepts of structure and forms are emphasized.

Fiber and Textile Design
Grades 7-8 (#IFT5712)
Grades 9-12 (#IFT5715)
Become familiar with textile dyeing and surface design techniques. Learn the preparation of fabric design through dyeing, resist, and pattern making.

 


 

Visual Arts Portfolio Preparation
Grades 10-12 (#IFT7066)
Portfolio review required.
This course will meet for a two period block and is intended for serious visual arts students. Trained faculty will assist International Baccalaureate Studio Art and Research Workbook, Advanced Placement Studio Art, and other high-level portfolio preparation students in advancing the depth and breadth of their portfolios and in completing summer assignments.

Figure Drawing
Grades 10-12 (#IFT5616)
Prerequisite: Foundations of Drawing
Students work with clothed models. Special emphasis is placed on accuracy and quality of rendering the human form, as conceived through knowledge of proportion and observation of light and form. It is recommended that this class be taken in conjunction with a painting course.



 

Watercolor I (new for 2008)
Grades 10-12 (#IFT6610)
Portfolio review required.
Students will focus on this painting medium from the basic to the advanced application. They will explore watercolor characteristics and papers, while integrating a variety of techniques and styles including: abstract, impressionism, surrealism, and realism. Paint applications such as wet-on-wet, dry brushing, resist, splattering and salt will be introduced.

Foundations of Drawing
Grades 7-8 (#IFT5612)
Grades 9-12 (#IFT5615)
Learn to translate the world into two dimensions. Develop form and line, express movement through gesture and space, and render light and dark through perspective. Gain confidence in drawing skills while learning with varied materials.
