A Step-by-Step Guide to Tiling Under Your Toilet

The tools you will need:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Water-pump pliers
  • Adjustable locking pliers
  • Slip pliers
  • Putty knife
  • Caulking gun
  • Rubber hammer
  • Pipe wrench
  • Hacksaw
  • Ratchet wrench
  • Sockets

Materials you will need:

  • Silicone caulking
  • Wax ring (appropriately sized)
  • Plastic toilet shims
  • Plumbers putty
  • Felt marker
  • Pipe compound
  • Closet flange
  • Extension flange

Procedure:

  1. Make a clear permanent trace mark on the floor around the toilet base.
  2. Shut the water off to the toilet and flush.
  3. Sponge any remaining water out of the water shed.
  4. Disconnect shutoff valve from piping coming from the floor.
  5. Lift toilet and remove old wax ring.  Save the ring for size reference.
  6. Remove old mounting bolts. (A new flange is screwed to the sub floor.)
  7. Use extra nuts to hold bolts upright.
  8. Cover waste pipe with a rag.
  9. Tile the floor to a point inside the mark outlining the toilet base.
  10. Drill a hole in the tile that will be used around the water pipe. Place tile around the pipe (remember water must be shut off at the main valve).
  11. Use an expandable collar around pipe to cover up hole in the tile.
  12. Place the toilet in position to test.
  13. If the toilet is positioned correctly, make another trace mark around the base.
  14. Remove the toilet and place a bead of tub/toilet caulk inside the trace line.
  15. Replace toilet, position and secure permanently. Wipe away any excess caulk.
  16. Reconnect the water supply.
