English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Every year, immigrants and refugees coming to the United States are confronted with the immediate challenges of living in a new culture and using a new language. The adjustment to the new country and culture is especially difficult for adults who have little or no knowledge of English.

General Information
The Adult ESOL program offers English classes at several levels of proficiency to foreign born adults learning English as a new language. Classes prepare adults to function in English in the community as students, workers, parents and citizens.

Classes serve not only as a place to learn English, but also to disseminate information to the students in a comprehensible fashion about parenting and schooling, working in the United States, living in a democracy, continuing education, being consumers, accessing community services, etc.


Placement Testing
Placement Testing – is required of new students. Take the placement tests at the same location where you want to take class.

  • Arrive early to get your seat (seating is limited to 75)
  • Testing lasts 2-3 hours
  • No children allowed

After completing the reading and writing tests you will be given an appointment to return for placement and registration.

Fees due at registration

  • Registration fee ($15)
  • Book (varies)
  • Tuition (varies)
  • No senior tuition discounts/waivers
  • Pay by money order, check, or credit card; no cash of new students. Take the placement tests at the same location where you want to take class.

Individuals with F1 or F2 visas (student visa holders and spouses) are not eligible for literacy through high advanced classes.


English in the Workplace
English in the Workplace offers resources for managing a diverse workplace and providing job-related English instruction to speakers of other languages.


Special Programs
  • Week End Learning Lab ((WELL) offers help to intermediate-level students every Saturday, 9a-12 noon at the Willston Multicultural Center, 6131 Willston Drive, Falls Church. For more information, call 703-536-2049.
  • U.S. Citizenship Classes are offered on Saturday mornings at Pimmit Adult Center and on Thursday evenings at Bryant Adult Center for students preparing for their USCIS interview. Call 703-714-5560.

Free training opportunities to community volunteer ESOL teachers.

  • Held at locations throughout Fairfax County.
  • Saturday mornings from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
  • Advanced reservations are required.
