Driver Education Program - Grades 9-12

NEW - registration procedures changed Friday, April 11 when online, mail, fax, and phone registration became available for both classroom and behind the wheel driver training.

Special walk-in date: Bryant registration center will be open for walk-in registration on the following Wednesdays: May 14, June 11, and July 9 from 9 am to 1 pm.

Registration in person, by a parent or guardian, is also available at Bryant, Central Fairfax, or Centreville ACE registration centers. NOTE: Student does not need to be present in order to register.

All students who register for Behind the Wheel during the school year must be enrolled in Fairfax County Public Schools. However, in the summer, Fairfax County residents who attend non-public schools or are home-schooled are eligible and may register. Non-FCPS students have additional registration requirements.

Classes are for high school students only. Students who will graduate from high school in June 2008 are not eligible to take summer classes. Transportation to and from the program is the responsibility of the parent or guardian.

Classroom Driver Education

Twelve 3-hour sessions             $165
Classroom driver education analyzes tasks an individual must perform while operating a motor vehicle. The program must include units about alcohol safety, drug abuse awareness, aggressive driving, distracted driving, motorcycle awareness and organ and tissue donation awareness.

No schedule classes may be missed. State required hours of 36 classroom periods and course content must be completed in order to be issued a Certificate of Classroom completion (DEC-1 card).

Students registering for both classroom and behind the wheel must schedule their behind the wheel classes so that a minimum of 10 hours of classroom driver education will be complete before the first behind the wheel class. Otherwise, the student will be transferred to a behind the wheel class that begins later.

The student must be 15 years of age by the first day of classroom driver education. Courses will not meet July 4, 2008.
