Selection Criteria for Summer School Employees

All completed applications submitted by the advertised due date shall be reviewed by the appropriate program managers for the purpose of identifying eligible candidates who meet the following criteria for selection of summer educational employees.

The following criteria (not listed in priority order) shall be used to determine the eligibility of hourly-paid teacher and instructional assistant applicants.

  • Possession of, or eligibility for, a professional teaching license issued by the state of Virginia with the appropriate endorsement (applicable to teaching only).

  • Effective performance as reflected by ratings on regular and/or summer school evaluations

  • Demonstrated success (a) in working with student populations whose needs are similar to the needs of those who will be in the summer program, e.g., English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students and students with special needs, or (b) in working with students in programs similar to those provided for students in the elementary learning or middle school learning program

  • Seniority in the school system is greater than that of other applicants, if other factors are equal

  • Qualifications and experiences corresponding to program needs as identified by the appropriate program manager or assistant superintendent

  • Positive recommendations from a program manager or a supervisor

  • Special skills or experiences needed for a specific program or grade level
