Part-Time Foreign Language Instructors
Adult and Community Education

Applications for Spanish language instructors for FLEX in the Vienna, Oakton, Fair Oaks, Springfield/Alexandria, and Clifton/Centreville areas, and French instructors for FLEX in the Springfield/Alexandria area are now being accepted. Interested individuals are encouraged to apply by August 5, 2008. Each language course meets once per week for 1 hour before or after school for 10 to 20 weeks starting in October at all participating Fairfax County Public Schools elementary schools. Qualifications: Experienced teachers in any subject area who are fluent in the target language are encouraged to apply. Endorsement in the target language is not required. Mentor Resource Teachers
$34.44 per Hour; 10 Hours per Week

The Great Beginnings Mentor Resource Teacher Program is seeking outstanding teachers to serve as part-time Mentor Resource Teachers (MRTs). MRTs work closely with new teachers at their school sites during the school day, providing confidential instructional support to the new teachers. The MRT is responsible for planning and implementing a mentoring program that is specific and unique to each beginning teacher’s strengths and needs. Services are not part of the Fairfax County Public Schools teacher performance evaluation process.

Mentor Resource Teachers work approximately 10 hours per week and are compensated on an hourly basis. Participation in initial and monthly ongoing professional development is mandatory.
Candidates must have experience working with diverse populations, a strong recommendation, mentoring experience, and excellent human relations skills. Most importantly, candidates must have a desire to support beginning teachers.

While recent experience is preferred, retired teachers who have served the minimum 1 year separation period, teachers on leave, or teachers who are not currently on contract with Fairfax County Public Schools are invited to apply. Applications will be accepted for anticipated openings in elementary K-6. At the middle school and high school levels, teachers of English, math, science, social studies, and ESOL may apply.

Tutors (Hourly; Evenings)
$30.17 per Hour

Applications for New Instructional Coaches
The Department of Professional Learning and Training is hiring instructional coaches for the 2008-09 school year. Elementary and middle school teachers who are interested in an instructional coach position are urged to apply. Special consideration will be given to interested and qualified teachers of mathematics at the middle school level.

A bachelor’s degree in education or in a K-8 core curriculum with a valid teaching license issued by or recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia (highly qualified status) is required. A postgraduate professional license is preferred. Five years of progressive teaching experience with a strong understanding of the Fairfax County Program of Studies and the Virginia Standards of Learning objectives are required. Applicants must also document a history of professional development activities at the school and district levels.

Expert knowledge of the following is required:

  • Best practices, current research, and resources related to instruction and FCPS goals and objectives.
  • Language arts and English and mathematics curriculum and instruction.
  • Strategies for differentiating to meet diverse student needs, including students with disabilities and ESOL requirements.

Vocational Evaluator

Marshall Assessment Center

A Certified Vocational Evaluator is needed to complete the Career Assessment Team that provides services to high school age students enrolled in special education or alternative programs. Responsibilities include career assessment, report preparation, communication, and staffing with school system professionals, outside agencies, and parents. Works as a member of a team of vocational evaluators and other educational professionals who staff two facilities serving 24 high/secondary schools and numerous alternative programs. Requirements include possession of or eligibility for CVE or vocational evaluator licensure in Commonwealth of Virginia; master’s degree; and experience with administering a variety of work samples and career assessment instruments and interpreting the results in a public school setting. Supporting the FCPS Middle School After-School Program
The Fairfax County Public Schools Middle School After-School program affords interested candidates the opportunity to work with groups of middle school students in a variety of academic, enrichment, youth development, and recreational activities from 2:30 – 6:00 p.m. daily.  We are looking for help with a myriad of activities to include, but not limited to, tutoring; teaching drama, dance, cooking, painting, gardening, and creative writing; supervising a literacy, math, technology, or science activity; coaching a sports activity; or teaching aerobics.  Work one to three hours per day for one to five days a week at multiple sites or simply concentrate at one location.  Candidates must be able to establish excellent rapport with middle school students and a willingness to serve as a positive role model.  The ability to communicate and collaborate with other after-school staff, classroom teachers, administrators, parents, and community members is essential. Salary ($15 - $22.84 per hr) is dependent on experience and education level.  This is an excellent opportunity for elementary, middle, and high school teachers to supplement their income. Homebound Teachers Needed
The homebound instruction program, which provides teachers for students unable to attend school because of medical or disciplinary reasons needs additional teachers.  All teachers certified in the state of Virginia are welcome to apply.  Teachers with VA certification in special education, math, and science are critically needed.  This is a part-time, hourly position; instruction may take place during the school day or after school hours for contracted teachers. School Crossing Guard
(Part-Time Employment with Fairfax County Police Department)
Controls traffic to ensure the safe and orderly movement of student pedestrians to and from school. Uniforms and training provided. High school graduation or G.E.D. required. Applicants must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check and medical exam provided by the Occupational Health Center.
