Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to adhering to the federal and state laws as they pertain to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) in protecting the privacy and security of your protected health information.

We have the following legal obligations under this federal health privacy law:

  • To maintain the privacy of your medical information
  • To provide you with the notice of our legal duties and privacy practices with respect to your medical information
  • To abide by the terms of the notice currently in effect

FCPS privacy and security policies and procedures are intended to ensure compliance with both the privacy and security rules.

Privacy Standards – Intended to protect patients’ medical records and other health information provided to health plans, doctors, hospitals and other health care providers. Also developed to provide patients with access to their medical records and more control over how their personal health information is used and disclosed.

Security Standards – Intended to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of all electronic protected health information (ePHI). Also protects against any reasonably anticipated threats or hazards to the security or integrity of the information.
