Note: Due between January 1 and June 30 of Five Year Professional License expiration year.

Teachers who need to renew their five-year VA teaching license need to do the following:

  • Child Abuse and Recognition Intervention (CARI) Certificate

  • Complete a total of 180 professional development points (please see definitions and instructions in the Virginia Licensure Renewal Manual acrobat.) You must earn these points during the validity period of your license and list them on an Individualized Renewal Record (IRR).

  • You must collect the following documents if applicable to you and attach them as the required proof to support your license renewal application packet –
    • Your My PLT transcripts/certificates by logging onto your My PLT account via http://www.fcps.edu/plt/MyPLT/index.html.  It should reflect your successful completion of following value types for professional development activities pre-approved, directed, and/or verified by your principal/program manager as suitable license renewal points –
      1. Academy Credits (1 academy credit = 30 license renewal points) is applicable only to License Renewal Option 1: College Credit
      2. Points (same as license renewal points) may be applied to License Renewal Option 2 – 8 if criteria match
      3. Hours may be applied to License Renewal Option 3, 6,7, or 8 if criteria match and conversion to license renewal points vary

    (Any discrepancy on your My PLT transcripts/Certificates must be communicated to ProfessionalLearningandTraining@fcps.edu.)

    AND/OR

    • Your official transcripts from regionally accredited college/university reflecting your successful completion of coursework (3 semester hour = 90 renewal points) is applicable only to License Renewal Option 1: College Credit

    (Any discrepancy on your official transcript must be communicated to the registrar at your college or university.)

  • If you hold a bachelors degree ONLY, a minimum of 90 points have to be three semester hours of college/university coursework or FCPS academy starred [*] coursework. You may register for FCPS Academy courses.

  • Consult with your principal or advisor annually, or as needed, to review and verify your IRR.

  • Submit to the FCPS Licensure Office your completed Individualized Renewal Record (IRR form) containing:
    • Your Principal’s or Technology Program Manager’s signature and date in the Technology Standards Verification section of the form.
    • Attachments of the official transcripts containing the courses listed

Please send completed IRR forms via pony mail or postal mail to the Licensure Office, Department of Human Resources, Gatehouse Administration Center I, 8115 Gatehouse Road, Falls Church VA 22042.

Remember to include your FCPS ID number on your documents.

FCPS Licensure Office transmits and pays licensure cost to the Virginia Department for FCPS contracted instructional/pupil servicing licensed employees.
