VRS Life Insurance (for full-time educational, administrative, and support monthly paid employees enrolled in VRS)

VRS Life Insurance Plans

Enrollment in FCPS life insurance plans is based on an employee's enrollment in a retirement program. If an employee is the VRS retirement plan, he or she is automatically enrolled in the basic VRS Life Insurance plan and is eligible for optional coverage. As part of this mandatory life insurance plan, employees are eligible to receive life insurance as well as accidental death and dismemberment benefits. This plan is sponsored by the Virginia Retirement System and insured through Minnesota Life Insurance Company.

Optional life insurance is an employee "guaranteed" benefit. This means that if an employee enrolls within 30 after your hire date, the benefit is guaranteed to the employee, regardless of his or her medical history. Employees may enroll at any time during their FCPS employment, but the benefit may not be guaranteed.

VRS Basic Group Life Insurance

  • Basic coverage can be formulated by rounding an employee's annual salary to the next highest thousand dollars and then doubling it.
  • If an employee should die in an accident, his or her benefit would generally be twice what it would be if he or she were to die of natural causes.
  • If an employee is in an accident, he or she will receive benefits according to the loss experienced in the accident (such as the loss of an arm or leg or loss of sight).
  • Employees can continue coverage while they are on a leave without pay but they are responsible for the premiums.

FCPS shares the cost of the VRS life insurance benefits. The employee contribution is deducted from paychecks each pay period.

VRS Optional Group Life Insurance

Through this program, employees may purchase additional life insurance at group rates for themselves and their family. Evidence of insurability is required for optional coverage. Employees may choose from three options, which include coverage up to:

  • Four times their salary for themselves
  • Two times their salary for their spouse
  • $24,000 for their children, depending on age

The cost is deducted in equal installments from their paycheck each pay period.

County Basic Life Insurance
(for full-time maintenance, custodial, food service, or transportation employees paid bi-weekly, or less-than-full-time educational, administrative, or support employees enrolled in FCERS)

If an employee is enrolled in the FCERS retirement plan, he or she is automatically enrolled in the basic County Life Insurance plan and is eligible for optional coverage.

As part of this mandatory life insurance plan, employees are eligible to receive life insurance as well as accidental death and dismemberment benefits. The benefits for the County Life Insurance plan are insured through Minnesota Life Insurance Company. Employees who work less than 50 percent of a normal scheduled workday (15 hours per week for food service) are not eligible for life insurance.

  • Employees can continue coverage while they are on a leave without pay but they will be responsible for the premiums.
