The Nancy F. Sprague First Year Administrator Award recognizes exemplary performance during the first year of principalship. The first year administrator award honors Nancy Sprague’s significant leadership in fostering the development of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) administrators. Dr. Sprague was instrumental in creating programs that supported first year administrators. In her honor, this award recognizes outstanding leadership by a beginning principal.

The winner, finalist, and nominees for this award are honored at the Principal of the Year special School Board Ceremony, to be held in May 2009.

Any FCPS employee or community member may nominate a first year principal for this award.

To be eligible for nomination, a principal must:

  • Possess administrator certification.
  • Have begun his or her first assignment as principal on or after January 1, 2007.
  • Have performed outstandingly, based on FCPS standards, during the initial year of assignment.
  • Serve as a role model for other beginning principals.

Nominees must be first year principals who:

  • Exhibit superior administrative skills.
  • Interact exceptionally well with teachers, staff, parents, and other community members.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills.
