Fairfax County Public Schools is currently hiring substitute teachers, instructional assistants, public health training assistants and attendants.

Hiring Process for Substitute…Teachers, Instructional Assistants & Public Health Training Assistants
A minimum of 60 hours of college credit is required to substitute teach with Fairfax County Public Schools. A High School diploma is required to be a substitute instructional assistant.
- $14.24 per hr--Sub Teachers
- $12.65 per hr--Public Health Training Assistant
- $11.69 per hr--Sub Instructional Assistants
Three easy steps to apply.
Step 1: Apply online through the FCPS Instructional Talent Gateway. After submitting your resume you will receive an e-mail giving instructions for Step 2.
Step 2: Teacher and Substitute Teacher Applicants
We receive a large number of resumes each year and use a web-based interview, TeacherInsight, to gather additional information about each applicant. The next essential step in the application process is for you to complete the TeacherInsight Interview which can be accessed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The interview takes approximately 40 minutes to complete, and each question is timed; therefore, it is important to complete the interview when you will not be interrupted.

Step 3: After submitting your resume and completing the TeacherInsight Interview, if you meet our qualifications, you will receive a e-mail asking you to call the Office of Substitute Services, Department of Human Resources, Fairfax County Schools Administrative Center, 8115 Gatehouse Road, Falls Church, VA 22042 to schedule an appointment for further processing, which includes, fingerprinting for a criminal background check.
After review of all documents and reference checks, if your qualifications meet Fairfax County Public Schools’ needs, you will be scheduled for an orientation.
At that time you must present the following documents:
- Two current year letters of character references signed and dated within the last 12 months. One of these should be from your most recent employer and both must include daytime phone numbers.
- A negative TB test done within the last 12 months signed by a physician.
- A social security card (social security card in your legal name no exceptions)
- Documents that establish employment eligibility

- Copies of official/unofficial college transcripts which show 60 credit hours or copies of official college transcripts which show a Bachelor's degree (diplomas are not accepted). Transcripts are necessary only for substitute teachers, not for substitute instructional assistants.
Note: If your transcripts or high school diploma were issued outside of the United States an evaluation is required.
- Voided check or saving deposit slip. Direct Deposit is mandatory.
