Standards of Learning (SOL) Test

The SOL tests are criterion-referenced tests required by the Virginia Department of Education. These tests are administered to students in grades 3 through 8 and to students upon completion of specific high school credit courses such as Algebra I.

History (United States History from1877 to Present) is administered at grade 7; English: writing, English: reading, mathematics, history (Civics and Economics), and science are administered at grade 8; end-of-course tests are administered to certain middle school students on completion of high school credit courses such as Algebra I. The percentages of students scoring in each proficiency level are reported, and results are based on SOL assessments for all students taking these tests. In reading and mathematics, results may include the scores of students re-taking previously failed tests for which they received remediation.
