The county PTA will advance the first place entries from each Cluster to the District PTA level - the next level of judging. Congratulations to all of our Reflections participants and winners.

Thank you Athena Gu and Melanie Dorn who have signed on to lead our Girls on the Run (GOTR) program this spring! Registration (girls in grades 3-6) begins February 21st, so be looking for a flyer in the Friday folder!

Stacey Leimbach is working hard to create the 2011-12 CPES Yearbook! If you visit your student’s classroom for activities, participate in field trips, or eat lunch with your kids, please take photos and pass them on to Stacey!!

We are still looking for a volunteer to coordinate with the committee chairs from our fellow Vienna Elementary Schools participating in the Safe Routes to School Program. For the past two years, CPES has participated in the week long Bike/Walk to school challenge, where volunteers keep count of how many bikers and walkers we have for the week. Last year CPES won!!  Let me know if you’re interested in leading this fun program!

You should have all received your Read-a-Thon packets, so READ READ READ! Log sheets and money need to be returned in the Ziplocs on February 1st! It’s important to remember that if students receive NO donations, they should still submit their log sheets in order to get a $5 certificate to use at the book fair!

The Scholastic Book Fair will take place the week of February 13th. We need volunteers to help at the Book Fair. I’ll be sending out a Jooners request so please let me know if you can help!

Mark your calendars! Dr. Seuss night and the Teacher Auction will be held February 29th. This is a fun family night, so we hope to see you there.

It’s a busy time of year with many exciting programs and activities. Please check out the PTA website for updates and calendar events; “like” the Cunningham Park Elementary School PTA Facebook page; or email me or any of the PTA members for any information you need.

February 10 - Distribution of Progress Reports

Students in grades K-6 will receive their second quarter progress reports on Friday, February 10.  Parents are asked to review the report, sign the envelope, and return the envelope to your child’s teacher acknowledging receipt of the report.  We encourage parents to talk about the positive gains as well as the areas for improvement/growth with your children.

It’s Cold Outside, So Bundle Up!

As the coldest weather of the year approaches, we encourage you to make sure your child has the appropriate winter clothes to wear here at school.  For the health and well-being of your child, it is extremely important that they are warm when exposed to the elements of a cold day.  As a school in FCPS, we have an obligation to keep children safe during the school day.  We are mandated to ensure that students are prepared for the cold weather of the winter and are directed by regulations to keep children inside during severe temperatures and wind chills.  Please help in our efforts by making sure your child is wearing clothes that keep them warm and comfortable throughout the entire school day.

It's That Time of Year Again . . .

Inclement Weather and Emergency Closing Plans
Due to inclement weather or other emergency situations, it may be necessary to close schools for the entire day, to open schools late, or to close early.

Parents are urged to make arrangements now for the care of their children when schedule changes are made (and to provide for the rare situation when it is necessary to close an individual school because of a power failure or other circumstances). Children should know where to go if a parent will not be home.

Decisions on schedule changes are made after careful study of the best information available from many sources including weather services, the highway department, the police, and FCPS transportation staff members who are out checking the roads. FCPS will make every effort to decide, before 4:30 a.m., whether to close or delay schools and will begin communicating the decision once it is made. The 4:30 a.m. decision time is a goal. Weather conditions can deteriorate after 4:30 a.m., which means that it may not be possible for FCPS to meet that goal.  Decisions are made with one overriding consideration—the safety of all students—those who ride buses, those who drive their own cars, and those who walk to school each day.

FCPS has several schedules set up to deal with inclement weather; these are put into effect when conditions threaten the safety of children:  (1) Keep schools closed. (2) Open two hours late. (3) Close two hours early.

When Fairfax County Public Schools has a schedule change (closing or delay) due to inclement weather or other emergencies, the information is communicated as soon as the decision is made in these ways:

Please note: FCPS schools are open unless information is posted or sent that indicates schools are closed, opening late, or closing early. During an emergency closing situation in which other local school systems are closed or delayed and FCPS is open on time, the crawl for local TV stations WJLA (ABC 7) and NewsChannel 8 will indicate "No Report" for FCPS.
