The library/media center provides a learning environment that encourages students and teachers to be life-long readers. Collaborating and planning with the classroom teachers, the librarian facilitates a program that enriches the classroom curriculum as well as supports the Fairfax County Program of Studies and the Standards of Learning at each grade level. All students select and check out library books during their weekly scheduled classes and have a lesson that may include a story, book talk, note taking, using the On-line Catalog (OLC), research skills, using a variety of data bases or identifying characteristics of fiction and nonfiction, etc. In addition the library has an "open" library policy which allows students to use the library any time during the day to check out books and/or do research. The library/media center has a main library, a professional library, and a television studio where the morning news show, ECPS Channel 6 News, is produced by sixth graders. There are four student positions - anchor, camera one operator, camera two operator, and audio/video mixer. Special news segments seen each week include "Poetry Corner", "Moments for Music and Art", "Character Counts", and this year "Un momento en espanol" (A minute in Spanish) has been added. Ms. Carlton and Ms. Karny are coordinating the "Moment for Music and Art" segment. Ms. Elliot will coordinate the "Character Counts" segment. Each month a different grade-level will contribute to the "Poetry Corner". The WCPS Channel 6 News show sets the town of the school day and communicates messages to all students. All students are encouraged to read a variety of books both fiction and nonfiction during the school year, and to become independent readers by making appropriate book selections. Most importantly we strive to create an environment where students feel comfortable and can recognize that the library is a place to explore, ask questions, discover new thought, find answers - but most of all it is a place to find the "just right" book. Welcome to OUR library!
