Dr. Jerome Kovalcik, Principal

Dr. Jerome Kovalcik, our Principal, has a total of 25 years of experience in the educational arena, all of it in Fairfax County. He attended the State University of New York, College at Fredonia and received both a B.S. in Elementary Education  and an M.S. in Education:Reading. He then went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy in Education from George Mason University. Dr. Kovalcik has experience both as a teacher and as an administrator. He spent 16 years working as a Reading Resource teacher and classroom teacher.  Dr. Kovalcik spent 2 years as a consulting teacher and peer observer for Area III.   He next spent 2 years as the Assistant Principal at Mantua Elementary school, a highly successful school for over 750 students, 60 staff/faculty, and a gifted/talented student center.  During this time Dr. Kovalcik shared, under the direction and mentoring of a National Principal of the Year, in the development of a Basic School focus, an emphasis on best practice and continued school improvement.  He worked with the principal, teachers, and community to develop “Mantua: A Basic School Powered by Technology” a unique technology program including student laptop computers and a state-of-the-art distance learning facility.

Most recently, Dr. Kovalcik has served as an Elementary Program Monitor.  In this capacity he was responsible for assisting in monitoring the school effectiveness and principal leadership of 44 elementary schools.  He was also responsible for assisting schools in the development of school plans, reviewing school planning documents, and evaluating program effectiveness.  Dr. Kovalcik assisted in the provision of data for principal evaluations.  He was responsible for preparing summary data, collaborating with student services and special education, conducting school visits, participating in workshops, compiling data for school and pyramid profiles, and collaborating with various school system offices. 

Dr. Kovalcik also served as the Coordinator of an elementary summer school program for more than 2,000 students at six sites.  He was responsible for coordinating summer facility use, new elementary school openings, planning the ongoing professional development for elementary assistant principals and a mentoring program for newly hired assistant principals. He was also responsible for responding to parents and community members interests and concerns with schools.

Dr. Kovalcik and his wife, Betty, enjoy being with their three lovely daughters. In his spare time, Dr. Kovalcik spends his time enjoying music, woodworking, food, and travel with family.
