The reading program at Crestwood is based on the belief that all children can become readers and writers. The reading and writing instruction is delivered via a balanced literacy approach. This means that, in our classrooms, observers will see reading and writing to, with, and by students at appropriate instructional levels. Children who need extra support with reading (or are reading above grade level) receive instruction from all available specialists according to their assessed needs. Assessments include phonemic awareness literacy screenings in kindergarten, developmental reading assessments in grades one and two, as well as individualized reading inventories. In conclusion, the reading program at Crestwood is a program that focuses on providing the methods and materials for appropriate, focused instruction and summative assessment that will foster the maximum growth and achievement for each reader and writer at Crestwood.
