Harper McCaughn Elementary School:
(Update)
A New Beginning…
We are happy to report that our friends at Harper McCaughan Elementary School, started classes in their brand new building on April 10, 2010. After Hurricane Katrina ravaged the town of Long Beach, Mississippi, and destroyed the elementary school of alumni, Adaptive P.E. teacher, Brenda Belote, the Cooper school community rallied to support the students and staff of this wonderful school. Through the generosity of many, Cooper provided goodies, school supplies, and money to buoy the spirit of those in need several times a year from 2005 through the move into their new school! There are approximately 375 students that attend Harper McCaughan.
Harper McCaughan was a businessman that donated land on which the school was built. After the hurricane, the new building was built further away from the seashore, about two miles from its original location. A town green will be built on the original sight of the school.
We are thrilled that students and staff are settled into their new school, and are grateful for the opportunity to help those in need, and make new friends at the same time!

Books of Hope: (www.booksofhope.org).
Books of Hope is a service-learning program where U.S. schools sponsor a school abroad and create books to help meet the students' educational needs. Cooper chose to sponsor OCIM Primary school in Uganda this year and we have sent over 300 books made by 7th grade students to Books of Hope to be shipped to Uganda later this summer.
Goals of the program include enhancing literacy and learning abroad by creating educational materials, supporting literacy in US schools by motivating students to read and write for an audience of their peers and fostering empathy and social responsibility. |
