Message from the Columbia ES Administration:

As part of the Annandale community, approximately 400 students, their families, and staff members are proud to call Columbia Elementary their school. Now in its 35th year, Columbia's building which was renovated in 1994 includes improved facilities such as a state-of-the-art media center, an art lab, and a technology lab. Columbia is home to English as a second language (ESOL), learning disability (LD), noncategorical education (NCE), noncategorical preschool and school-based gifted and talented programs. We focus on students' needs in an ever-changing society. To achieve this, we employ the latest educational research and learning theories in the classroom. Members of the teaching staff participate in ongoing professional growth. Areas of emphasis include differentiated instruction, the integration of technology into all areas of the curriculum and adaptations of the curriculum to meet the needs of nontraditional learners. We emphasize development of higher-level thinking skills. We believe that opportunities presented in the classroom foster a climate in which students are free to test their thinking. We help students access information that can be applied to problem-solving practices. We help foster respect for all members of the community, provide skills for working cooperatively, and understand the richness that diversity brings. Columbia has a strong corps of volunteers to enhance the educational opportunities that will afford each student the chance to prosper now and in the future. The students and staff members benefit significantly from the continuing support of an active PTA.
