Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman was an an African American woman who was born a slave. She believed slavery was wrong and escaped from the southern plantation she worked on in 1849. After Harriet reached freedom in the North, she returned to the South to help other slaves reach freedom. Harriet led over 300 slaves to freedom using the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad was actually the walking route Harriet used to travel to the North. Along the route were many houses, barns, and churches where Harriet and the slaves hid during their trip. Harriet was never caught and never lost a slave. Because of her bravery and accomplishments Harriet was known as "the Moses of her people."
