Squanto was a Native
American, which means that he and his people lived on the
land we now call America before white people came from
Europe. He knew how to farm the land and fish in the waters.
Early explorers captured him and took him to Europe as a
slave. In Europe he learned the ways of the white people and
learned to speak English. He escaped and made his was back
to his homeland only to find his people had died from a
disease. He was very sad and lonely. He began to explore new
lands and came across a group of European settlers called
the Pilgrims. He could speak their English language and
therefore helped them plant crops, build houses, and store
food for the long winter that was soon to come. The Pilgrims
were thankful for Squanto's help. They enjoyed a huge feast
together that fall. We remember this feast every year when
we celebrate
Thanksgiving.
