Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Kentucky. He lived in a log cabin on the American frontier. As a boy Lincoln loved to read. When he grew up he became a lawyer. Abraham Lincoln was elected to be the sixteenth President of the United States. During his Presidency, the Union States and the Confederate States fought in the Civil War. The North (Union) wanted to abolish slavery, but the South (Confederacy) did not. President Lincoln believed slavery was wrong and issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all the slaves. In 1865 the war ended and the North was victorious. Unfortunately, not everyone was happy about the results of the war. John Wilkes Booth was one of those people. He shot and killed President Lincoln at Ford's Theater shortly after the war ended. President Lincoln is most remembered for his honesty and fairness.
