Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia. His father was a minister
and taught Martin to believe that all people should be
treated equally. It was upsetting for Martin to see his
fellow African Americans be treated poorly because of the
color of their skin, so he gave speeches and led peaceful
marches so that white people would know that discrimination
was not right. In his most famous speech, Martin said "I
have a dream that one day...black boys and black girls will
be able to join hands with....white boys and white girls and
walk together as sisters and brothers." Dr. King won the
Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Then in 1968, he was shot and
killed by a man who thought black people should not be equal
to white people. We celebrate his birthday on the third
Monday in January every year.
