Helen Keller

Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880. When she was two years old she got very sick. After she recovered, she could not see, hear, or speak. Helen's father wanted to find a teacher who would help her learn. Annie Sullivan became Helen's teacher and she taught Helen many words. She taught Helen Braille, which is a way for people who cannot see to "read." Raised dots stand for different letters and sounds. Helen felt the dots and read with her fingers. She also taught Helen to speak. Helen loved to learn and attended Radcliffe College. Helen and Annie wrote many books and speeches together. They wanted to help other people who had disabilities. Helen Keller's accomplishments continue to inspire both people living with and without disabilities.
