George Washington

George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, in Virginia. When he was young, his father died, and he moved to a new home called Mount Vernon to live with his brother Lawrence. Lawrence taught him how to hunt, fish, ride horses, and farm. When the American colonists wanted to be independent from Britain, Washington was the commander of the American Army. Later, he went to our nation's capital to help write the Constitution, or set of laws for our new country. He was elected the first President of the United States. He was President for eight years, then went home to Mount Vernon to be with his wife, Martha. He is known as the "Father of our Country".
