Ruby Bridges

This is Ruby Bridges going to school with the U.S. Marshal.

All grown up now, Ruby Bridges still works to make sure all kids get a good education.

Ruby Bridges was an African American girl who lived during the time when black people were not considered equal to white people. There were many laws that kept blacks and whites separate and allowed white people to do things that black people couldn't do. One law said that black and white children could not attend the same school. This was unfair because white schools had better supplies and teachers than black schools. Over time, the laws changed, and schools were expected to let black and white children mix. However, many white people did not like that decision. When Ruby had the chance to go to an all white school, the white people were mad! The parents didn't want their children going to school with a black child. They tried to stop Ruby from going to the white school by yelling mean things at her and making her be in a classroom all by herself. They thought they would be able to make Ruby give up and go back to her black school, but she didn't. She stayed at the white school until she was treated fairly.
