 Johnny Appleseed was born as John Chapman in 1774. He was born in Massachusetts at the time when the American frontier was expanding westward. It is said that Johhny carried a bag of apple seeds and started apple orchards as he moved west. He did this so pioneers moving west would have food to eat. That is how he got the name Johnny Appleseed. There are also many stories about Johnny's great strength and his friendships with the Indians and forest animals. Johnny Appleseed is an American legend. A legend is a person with a "larger than life" history. Although none of the stories about Johnny Appleseed have been proven true, his story is an interesting piece of American history. |
