Third Grade is a fun and challenging year. Here at Cherry Run we have three third grade teachers; Mrs. Daly andMrs. Tuthill.
Our language arts curriculum includes learning how to write strong paragraphs using the four square format. The students will be reading a variety of genres emphasizing comprehension strategies to prepare the students for SOLs. Third grade is also the first introduction to cursive writing for the students.
Mathematics focuses on the eight math strands. One of the most exciting new concepts is learning multiplication facts.
Our Social Studies curriculum includes the study of four ancient cultures, economics, geography, and civics. We culminate our ancient China unit by celebrating the Chinese New Year with a dragon parade, Chinese tasting, and Chinese crafts.
We have four FCPS science kits; Rocks and Minerals, Mystery Powders, Our Changing Earth, and Butterflies. These are all wonderful hands on learning experiences for the students. We also build on the eight science strands that started in first grade.
Third grade is the first year where the children are given the Virginia SOL tests. We spend a great deal of time in preparation for these difficult tests. During the month of May, the third graders are tested in Math, Reading, Science, and Social Studies. |
